The American Way

As a follow-up to the recent article about UConn‘s sad status of being left out of a “Power 5” conference (SEC, B1G, ACC, Big XII, Pac12), and speculation of Texas someday joining the ACC, I started to think about what could be next for the teams in the American Athletic Conference, as well as other “mid-major” football programs.

As pointed out by one of the astute commenters, the schools in the new Big East will make more money per year than schools in the AAC. It’s a sad fact that the schools WITH football teams are making less money than the BASKETBALL schools.

Frankly, if anyone can make a compelling argument for being included as “Power Conference” it’s the Big East (for basketball) and possibly the MAC (football).

Which is why I think that I may have finally found a solution that could work. Instead of trying to compete  against each other to get the illusive “sixth spot” and be considered as an equal to the rest of the Football Conferences, the mid-major conferences of the MWC, C-USA, and AAC should form a new league: the Mountain West Conference USAmerican Athletic Conference. Capital One Cupdate – Unofficial Final Standings – UPDATED

Update: Capital One Cup has confirmed that UCLA is the Men’s Winner. See below for the revised final standings.

The College World Series of Baseball is over, and as every good Big Ten fan knows that can only mean one thing: time to hand out the Capital One Cup honors, which is the most important way of measuring a Conference’s success, behind of course how much revenue that conference distributes to its teams.

The official results have not yet come out, however based on the final rankings of College Baseball, we can extrapolate who the winner will be.

So unless there are some other Division 1 National Championships yet to be determined, or unless Professor Dumbledore can hand out special points at the final Capital One Cup banquet, it’s time to crown the winner.

It’s important to note that going into the CWS, the hands on-favorite to win the Capital One Cup was a team that was currently in the top-10 and still in the College World of Series final brackets; namely the Indiana Hoosiers who were tied for 5th place with 76 points and only needed a top-5 final ranking to finish on top of the COC final standings (seriously, the acronym for Capital One Cup is “COC”). So, without further adieu… Read more…

Crazy Court Designs

The rage in college sports lately has been the one-up-manship in ugly uniforms, fields, and courts. Attention-seeking Athletic Directors and corporations are more than willing to put their stamp on college athletics in order to drive more business or exposure for their respective products. The Confidential believes its only a matter of time before teams in the ACC get behind this trend as well, so here are some suggestions for ACC team home courts that we would like to see: Read more…

Rutgers AD Search

With the latest ignorant ramblings from the president of one the Big Ten’s flagship programs, the media has fortunately turned their attention away from the clusterf*ck that is Rutgers Athletic Department the past few months. Which is a blessing for the University since it takes the spotlight off of their ineptitude and gives them a chance to move forward.

However I can’t help but wonder, How the hell Rutgers managed to botch this so badly? Read more…

B1G NEWS: Big Ten Dropping Rutgers, Searching for Replacement

(Mordor Park Ridge, Illinois) There is stunning news developing in Big 10 country, where the Big Ten Presidents are considering a vote to rescind Rutgers’ invitation to join the conference amid the (cough**dumpster fire that is Rutgers’ Athletic Department**cough)  past three months scandals that have embroiled the school.  See here and here.

Because Rutgers is not fully integrated into the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), which was expected on or about July 1, 2013, this remains possible but the Big Ten must move quickly to exercise this option.

Former Rutgers Athletic Director, Tim Pernetti, called it a sad day in Rutgers history and immediately started working on the University’s “resignation” letter for the Big Ten.

Although Big 10 fans deemed the addition of Maryland and Rutgers to be as exciting as a stale fig newton, and were looking forward to mediocre football games between the State University of New Jersey and Illinois, the move was an attempt to profit from the media-heavy NY/NJ market. As a speculative add, however, the gamble was on the long-term success.  But the numerous short-term embarrassments are proving too much for the most proud conference this side of the Ivy League.  Thus, while it may take a few days to finalize, the Big 10-Rutgers marriage is over.

Upon hearing of the news, Rutgers’ ex-basketball coach Mike Rice resumed throwing basketball at random people’s heads and yelling profanities.
