Pittsburgh… Not Good Times

When the ACC decided to add Pittsburgh and Syracuse, a logical thought pattern might have been that adding two perennially good basketball teams with strong football tradition was a no-brainer.  A couple of teams that are used to having top 4 seeds in March. What would not have been logical, however, was to expect that the ACC was adding a team that would be 11-6 at this point in the season.  But that is exactly what Pittsburgh is at this point of 2011-2012.  These are not good times in Pittsburgh.

To be sure, 11-6 is hardly a start that gets coaches fired.  But it goes deeper than the numbers.  You have to look at who Pittsburgh has lost to this year and where they have played.

Last night, Wednesday, Pittsburgh lost to Rutgers…at home… 63-39.  That’s a MAC football score, not a basketball score.  That’s Rutgers, not UConn.

Most problematic is that this was not a fluke, but a trend.  On November 16, Pitt allowed good, but hardly great, Long Beach State to overcome the vaunted Pitt home court advantage.  But Pitt put everyone at ease by winning 9 straight.  That streak ended when Wagner defeated Pitt at home.  As CBS reported after that game:

Pitt has been nearly unbeatable in nonconference games since the Petersen Events Center opened in 2002. The Panthers had lost just one non-Big East game in the arena’s first nine seasons. Now they have dropped two in the span of five weeks.

So there were concerns heading into Big East play.  But Pittsburgh’s opening four games could not have been less intimidating.  First, conference play opened up at Notre Dame–a team playing without its best player, Tim Abromaitis.   Pitt then got to host Cincinnati without its best player, Yancy Gates, who was suspended.  Pitt then got to travel back to Chicagoland to play hapless DePaul.  Finally, Pitt was scheduled to host Rutgers, a team that has been better than DePaul, but not by much.  In most years, that is 4-0.  This year?  0-4.  Yep, Pitt has lost all four of those games, including last night’s blowout.

Thus, while Pitt is 11-6, they have not even hit the meat of the conference schedule yet.  And it is right around the corner with a two-game road trip to #22 Marquette and #1 Syracuse.

Again, these are not good times.

The Confidential’s Basketball Top 30 for January 10, 2012

With over 300 teams in college basketball, the top 25 is just not enough anymore.  Here is the Confidential’s Top 30 for January 10, 2012:

  1. Syracuse (17-0).  And then there were three.  While nearly everyone has suffered one loss or more, Syracuse remains unbeaten.  Next up: @ Villanova.
  2. Kentucky (15-1).  Kentucky picked up two more wins, but was not tested.  Next up: @ Auburn.
  3. North Carolina (14-2).  The Tar Heels had a bye.  That is, they hosted Boston College.  Next up: Miami.
  4. Baylor (15-0).  15 straight is 15 straight.  Missouri fell to Kansas State on Saturday, will Baylor do better?  Next up: @ Kansas State.
  5. Michigan State (14-2).  The Spartans picked up a huge win at Wisconsin, which is usually a tough venue.  Next up: Iowa.
  6. Indiana (15-1).  The Big 10 is having a great year and Indiana deserves credit for that.  They get the edge of the Buckeyes based on head-to-head.  Next up: Minnesota.
  7. Ohio State (15-2).  Ohio State can get its revenge against Indiana later this week when the Hoosiers visit.  Next up: @ Illinois.
  8. Duke (13-2).  Loss to Temple should have dropped the Blue Devils farther, but everyone else seemed to lose too.  Next up: Virginia.
  9. Missouri (14-1).  Completely handled by Kansas State for loss number one.  They get a pass for now.  Next up: @ Iowa State.
  10. Kansas (12-3).  Kansas easily defeated the team that easily defeated Missouri.  Still avoiding the top teams in conference.  Next up: @ Texas Tech.
  11. UNLV (16-2).  The losses to Wichita State and Wisconsin are not looking as good now.  Big game coming up.  Next up: @ San Diego State.
  12. Virginia (14-1).  Look, there are a lot of good two-loss teams.  But Virginia has only lost once and they’ll be tested right away.  Next up: @ Duke.
  13. Kansas State (12-2).  Hard to move a team up 10 spots when they are blown out.  The big win over Missouri does it though.  Next up: @ Baylor.
  14. Georgetown (13-3).  Home loss to Cincinnati was sloppy and well deserved.  Will stay ahead of Louisville only because Georgetown beat them.  Next up: @ St. John’s.
  15. Louisville (13-3).  The loss to Notre Dame was shocking.  Expect the Friars to give Louisville a run.  Next up: @ Providence.
  16. Seton Hall (14-2).  Only losses were to Syracuse and Northwestern.  Wins over UConn and West Virginia.  Next up: DePaul
  17. Murray State (16-0).  Still rolling.  The latest victim was Austin Peay.  Next up: Jacksonville State.
  18. Michigan (13-3).  Narrow loss at Indiana offset by nice win against Wisconsin.  Next up: Northwestern.
  19. Creighton (13-2).  Wins over Drake and Bradley last week.  Three games this week.  Next up: Northern Iowa.
  20. San Diego State (13-2).  Finally done playing the community colleges.  Will they be looking ahead to UNLV?  Next up: Chicago State.
  21. Gonzaga (13-2).  Nice wins over Pepperdine and Santa Clara.  Tough week this week though.  Next up: @ St. Mary’s.
  22. Mississippi State (13-3).  Conference play woes as the trip to Arkansas resulted in a tough defeat.  Next up: Tennessee.
  23. Alabama (12-3).  Look out for the Crimson Tide!  They rolled through Georgia last week with wins over the Bulldogs and Ga Tech.  Next up: LSU.
  24. Marquette (12-4).  Marquette looked great in losing to Georgetown and even better in the second half against Syracuse.  Still, two losses.  Next up: St. John’s.
  25. Wisconsin (12-5).  Wisconsin lost to Michigan State and Michigan last week.  Not yet though.  Next up: @ Purdue.
  26. UConn (13-3).  Losses to Seton Hall and Rutgers were unexpected, to say the least.  Righted the ship against West Virginia.  Next up: @ Notre Dame.
  27. Florida (12-4).  Loss at Tennessee is disappointing.  Still it was a road game and the Gators have not lost at home yet.  Next up: Georgia.
  28. Dayton (12-4).  What to make of Dayton?  Losses to Miami of Ohio and Buffalo?  Wins over Alabama, Wake Forest, Minnesota, St. Louis and Temple?  Losses to Murray State and Seton Hall?  Next up: @ St. Bonaventure.
  29. Illinois (13-3).  Only losses are Purdue (away), UNLV, and Missouri.  We’ll learn more this week.  Next up: Ohio State.
  30. West Virginia (12-5).  After the upset loss to Kent State, the Mountaineers have only lost to teams ranked higher in this poll.  Next up: @ Rutgers.

ACC Basketball Rankings: January 9, 2012

This is particularly complex with Pitt and Syracuse not yet in the ACC, but it can still be done.  Here is how we view the ACC basketball schools as of January 9, 2012:

1.  Syracuse (17-0)  Wins over Providence on the road and #20 Marquette at home have Syracuse at 17-0.  They travel to Villanova this week, before hosting Providence.

2. North Carolina (15-2)  The Tar Heels are starting to find their groove again.  This weeks foes, Miami and Florida State, have not gotten off to the starts that they wanted/needed.

3. Duke (13-2)  The loss to Temple was disappointing, but not terrible.  The win over Georgia Tech is not that informative.  The next game, Virginia, is for #3.

4. Virginia (14-1)  Virginia has now won 12 straight games.  If the Cavs can beat Duke, that will get everyone’s attention.

5. North Carolina State (12-4)  The win over much-improved Maryland was nice.  Gives the Wolfpack the edge over Virginia Tech, who lost to Wake Forest.

6. Virginia Tech (11-4)  Road loss to Wake Forest was a disappointment, but not the end of the world.  Virginia Tech still has a decent resume overall.

7. Maryland (10-4) Road loss to NC State was a disappointment.  The Terps host Wake Forest and can solidify the #7 spot with a win.

8. Wake Forest (10-4) Up a few notches after beating Virginia Tech.  Beating Maryland on the road would be even more impressive.

9. Miami (9-5)  Miami lost its conference opener in a tough road loss to Virginia.  And now they travel to North Carolina on Tuesday.  Tough start to the conference schedule.

10. Pittsburgh (11-5)  Not only have the wheels fallen off, they are rolling around somewhere nowhere near Pitt.  That’s what happens when you lose to DePaul.

11. Clemson (9-6)  Looked very good against Florida State.  Clemson gets Boston College this week for a chance to get that 10th win.

12. Florida State (9-6)  Beating Auburn was nice.  Losing to Clemson was tough.  Losing by 20 was inexcusable.  The Seminoles travel to Virginia Tech before hosting North Carolina this week.  Uh-oh.

13. Georgia Tech (7-8) After getting decimated by Alabama, the Yellow Jackets held their own against Duke.  At least for a while.

14. Boston College (5-10)  It is unfortunate when the worst team in the league has to open its conference schedule at North Carolina.

ACC Basketball Recap: January 7, 2012

The ACC opened conference play yesterday and there were a lot of good games.  And all the ranked teams held off their opponents.

In the closest game of the day, #21 Virginia improved its winning streak to 12 by defeating visiting Miami, 52-51.  The Cavaliers led by 11 at the half, but the Hurricanes made it a see-saw affair for most of the second half in this very low-scoring tilt.  Although maybe some criticism for the offenses is justified, the defenses can take credit for each team shooting under 40% for the entire game.   Miami big man Kenny Kadji led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Virginia forward Mike Scott led all scorers with 23 points, while also adding 8 rebounds of his own.  With the loss, Miami falls to 9-5 on the season.  Virginia moves to a very impressive 14-1.  All ACC eyes now turn to their upcoming visit to Duke on January 12.

Speaking of Duke, the #5 Blue Devils were the only ACC team to win on the road as Duke defeated struggling Georgia Tech, 81-74.  Georgia Tech was never able to grab a lead and ultimately suffered its fourth straight loss to fall to 7-8 on the season.  But it was not for the lack of effort by Glen Rice, Jr, who led all scorers with 28 points.  Instead, credit goes to Duke for rebounding from its loss to Temple with a good performance on the road.  Ryan Kelly led Duke with 21 points, while Seth Curry added 15 in a balanced Duke attack.  With the win, Duke improves to 13-2 on the season.

In a somewhat surprising result, Wake Forest was able to defeat Virginia Tech at home, 58-55.  After going 1-15 in conference play last year, Wake Forest has already matched its conference win total from last year.  As the score indicates, neither team shot very well, with both teams failing to surpass the 40% barrier.  And CBS provides the following play-by-play recap of the exciting finish:

The Hokies took their first lead of the game at 53-52 when Jarell Eddie knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:18 left. But [C.J.] Harris answered seconds later, faking a pass to the left corner to buy some space and then burying the 3 for the 55-53 lead with a minute left.

[Erick] Green answered with a jumper with 45.1 seconds left, but Harris came through again by rounding a screen from Carson Desrosiers and burying another 3 to make it 58-55. This time that lead held up, though not until after Robert Brown missed a hurried long 3 on the Hokies’ final possession. Travis McKie grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 0.2 seconds left, essentially sealing the victory.

Harris and McKie led Wake Forest with 13 and 12 points, respectfully. Green’s 19 points led Virginia Tech.  With the win, Wake Forest improves its overall record to 10-5.  With the loss, Virginia Tech falls to 11-4.

And, in a matchup between two ranked teams, #1 Syracuse held off #20 Marquette, 73-66.  Syracuse led by as many as 23 in the first half, only to see its 18-point halftime lead evaporate within minutes in the second half.  Marquette even got as close as 2 points down the stretch before Syracuse closed them out to improve to 17-0 on the season.  Darius Johnson-Odom led Marquette with 21 points, while Brandon Triche led Syracuse’s typically balanced scoring attack with 16 points.  Syracuse will keep its well-deserved #1 ranking for yet another week.

In other games, the visitors were not able to keep the games close at all. #3 North Carolina had no trouble in defeating cellar-dweller Boston College, 83-60.  With the win, North Carolina moves to 14-2.  Clemson upended visiting Florida State, 79-59.  Both teams are now 9-6.

In today’s action, Maryland (10-3) will travel to North Carolina State (10-4).

Maryland Gets 10th Win, Defeats Cornell

Bouncing back from a disappointing 3-3 start to the season, Maryland improved to 10-3 with a 70-62 win over Cornell.  That makes seven straight wins for Maryland as it heads into conference play.

At one point, it was looking like the Terps basketball season might rival the football team.  While there is no shame in losing to Illinois or Alabama, the 26-point drubbing by Iona on a neutral court in November suggested that this would be a tough year.  But Maryland has gone a great run to get itself back into position for a spot in the Big Dance.

Against Cornell, Sean Mosely led the way with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.  Alex Len added 15 points and 9 rebounds.  Terrell Stoglin scored 14 points, but struggled to a 6 for 16 shooting night.  Maryland’s defense was also sound, holding the Big Red to 42.3% shooting from the field, including 23.3% from three-point range.  With the loss, Cornell drops to 4-9.

For Maryland, they enter ACC play on a hot streak.  But it quickly ends as they travel to North Carolina State on Sunday.  One of these teams is going to have to lose.  The Wolfpack are 10-4, having won 5 of their last 6 games–with the loss being to #1 Syracuse.  They also play Delaware State on Wednesday, so they have a decent chance of getting their 11th win before conference play kicks off.

#21 Virginia Defeats LSU, Improves to 13-1

At the beginning of the year, the ACC only had two ranked teams–Duke and North Carolina.  Virginia has climbed into the rankings with a solid November and December.  Virginia’s January got off to a great start, as the #21 Cavaliers traveled to Baton Rouge to defeat LSU, 57-52, to improve to 13-1.

This game was a very close, defensive struggle as both teams shot less than 45% from the field.  It was tied at halftime, 26-26.  And, with five minutes to go, the Cavs trailed 47-46.  But Virginia was fairly clutch down the stretch with its free throw shooting and three-point shots to pull off the victory.

Virginia was led by Sammy Zeglinski’s 17 points.  Joe Harris added 14 points, while Mike Scott had 12 points and 9 rebounds.  Virginia opens the ACC schedule on Saturday against Miami.

Speaking of Miami, the ended the out-of-conference schedule with a 99-89 win over North Carolina-Greensboro.  Kenny Kadji scored led Miami with 30 points and 12 rebounds.  Three other Hurricanes finished in double-digits in scoring.

But the rest of the ACC fared poorly. Wake Forest lost some significant momentum by losing to Wofford, at home, 56-52.   Wake Forest had won 3 in a row and was looking to get its 10th overall win.  With the loss, Wake drops to 9-5 as it heads into conference play.

Meanwhile, Boston College continued to cement its position as the cellar-dweller in the ACC, losing to Rhode Island in double-overtime, 78-72.  The Eagles dropped to 5-9 with the home loss to the Rams (who improved to 3-12).  It’s going to be a very long season for Boston College.

The Confidential’s Basketball Top 30 for January 2, 2012

With over 300 teams in college basketball, the top 25 is just not enough anymore.  Here is the Confidential’s Top 30 for January 12, 2012:

  1. Syracuse (15-0).  One of only four unbeatens.  Travel to Providence before hosting scrappy Marquette on Saturday.  Marquette has had Syracuse’s number lately.
  2. Kentucky (13-1).  Loss to Indiana hurts, but rallied to beat Louisville.  Next test is Saturday against South Carolina.
  3. North Carolina (13-2).  No real tough games for a while.  Duke will be tested more often over the next few weeks.
  4. Duke (12-1).  Ready to leapfrog North Carolina with a few more wins.  Upcoming game against Temple is a start.
  5. Missouri (13-0).  The Tigers are undefeated and have better wins than Baylor.  That will not last forever, but that is how it is right now.
  6. Baylor (13-0).  The Big XII will separate the men from the boys.  Soon enough Baylor and Missouri will sort things out.
  7. UConn (12-1).  12-1 and rolling.  UConn has improving Seton Hall and up-and-down Rutgers this week.
  8. Michigan State (13-2).  Win over Indiana was big.  So far, only two losses are to North Carolina and Duke.
  9. Indiana (13-1).  Only loss was to MSU–at MSU.  Wins over Kentucky and Ohio State are very nice.
  10. Ohio State (13-2).  Loss to Kansas short-handed and lost to Indiana (just like Kentucky did).  Some nice wins too.
  11. Georgetown (12-1).  Watch out  for the Hoyas–young players that are starting to get on a roll.
  12. Kansas (10-3).  Kansas could go up and they could go down.  The feeling is that they are not staying right here though.
  13. UNLV (15-2).  Impressive wins over UNC and Illinois.  No shame in losing to Wisconsin or Wichita State.
  14. Louisville (12-2).  Two losses in a row–even to Georgetown and Kentucky–cause a drop in the standings.  This is about right for the Cards.
  15. Harvard (12-1).  Only loss is to UConn.  The teams behind them cannot say that–all have at least one head-scratcher.
  16. Murray State (14-0).  Likely to be the last team to get a loss.  It’s going to take one heck of an upset.
  17. Marquette (12-2).  Gets the nod here by virtue of beating Wisconsin head-to-head.  Had “one of those games” against Vanderbilt.
  18. Wisconsin (12-3).  Loss to Iowa is a perplexing.  Wisconsin was on a mini-roll.
  19. Mississippi State (13-2).  Had a chance to really climb, but fell to still-undefeated Butler.  Only game this week is Arkansas.
  20. Florida (10-3).  Losses to Syracuse and Ohio State were reasonable.  Rutgers?  Not so much.
  21. Virginia (12-1).  If they can get to 14-1, things will look better.  LSU beat Marquette.  Miami will give them a game.
  22. Michigan (12-2).  If they can get to 14-2, they will leapfrog Virginia and others.  That would require beating Indiana and Wisconsin!
  23. Creighton (11-2).  Hard to figure–suffered an upset loss, but then rebounded with an upset win over Wichita State.  Parity.
  24. San Diego State (12-2).  Not challenging itself right now.  Hard not to win.
  25. Kansas State (11-1).  They have Kansas and Missouri this week.  Tough week.
  26. Gonzaga (11-2).  Only losses were to Michigan State and Illinois.  Win over Xavier looked better than it does now.
  27. Seton Hall (12-2).  Losses to Syracuse and Northwestern.  #4 RPI so far.
  28. Virginia Tech (11-3).  Two wins over Oklahoma State, plus they gave Syracuse their best test so far this year.
  29. Purdue (12-3).  Realistically, could and should be higher.  A tough January will allow Purdue to prove same.
  30. Stanford (12-2).  Only losses were to Syracuse and Butler.  This team will only get better too.

ACC Basketball Recap: December 31, 2011

The last day of 2011 basketball games went very well for the ACC, as it won all three games.

Leading the way was Virginia Tech defeating Oklahoma State, 67-61.  If this matchup sounds familiar, it is.  The Hokies defeated Oklahoma State in the consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York City.  This time, Virginia Tech traveled to Stillwater to defeat the Cowboys.  Although this is not a great Oklahoma State team (7-6), this is an important win for the Hokies, who seem to perennially be on the Big Dance Bubble.  With the win, Virginia Tech moves to 11-3.  Dorenzo Hudson led Virginia Tech with 18 points.  The Hokies begin conference play next Saturday by traveling to Wake Forest.

North Carolina State improved to 10-4 with its 82-55 win over West Carolina.  All five starters for the Wolfpack finished in double-figures in scoring, led by CJ Williams’ 21 points.  Richard Howell added 14 rebounds.  That’s four straight wins for NC State since losing to #1 Syracuse in early December.  They get Delaware State on Wednesday before their January 8th ACC opener against Maryland.

And Maryland improved to 9-3 by edging pesky Samford, 75-63.  It was the Terrell Stoglin show for Maryland, as he led the team with 24 points.  ESPN’s recap added:

Maryland (9-3) has won six straight and finished the month of December undefeated — the Terrapins’ last loss coming Nov. 29.

It was the ninth time in 12 games that Stoglin, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading scorer, scored 20 points or more. He hit six 3-pointers, a career best, for the second game in a row. Maryland was 9 of 17 (52.9 percent) beyond the arc.

Indeed, the Terps were only 3-3 at the end of November and looking to match their football team in terms of disappointment.  Maryland hosts struggling Cornell (4-8) on Tuesday as the final tune-up for its opener against NC State.

ACC Basketball Recap: December 29, 2011

December 29 was a tough night for the ACC, as two of its five teams in action suffered defeats.

Boston College lost to Harvard at home, 67-46.  That Boston College lost was not surprising, as Harvard is 11-1 on the year now and ranked in the top 25.  What is disappointing is that, according to CBS, it was “the fourth straight season that Harvard has beaten Boston College on the Eagles’ home court.”  That is how far things have fallen for the Eagles.  Losing to Harvard is part of a trend, not an anomaly.  With the loss, Boston College drops to 5-8 on the season.

Georgia Tech lost to Fordham, 72-66.   If there is a good news, it is that Georgia Tech did not lose at home.  Still, this is a Fordham team that is now 6-6 and has already lost to Monmouth and Lehigh.  There is no reason for an ACC school to lose a game like this.  With the loss, the Yellow Jackets drop to a disappointing 7-6.  Jason Morris came off the bench to lead Georgia Tech with 17 points.

Wake Forest had some serious trouble with Yale, before ultimately winning 72-71.  Actually, at one point, Wake Forest had a 19 point lead over the visitors.  And Wake Forest never trailed in the game.  Nevertheless, Yale rallied to close the gap during the second half to make for some antacid moments down the stretch.  With the loss, Yale drops to a respectable 8-3.  With the win, Wake Forest improves to 9-4.  CJ Harris led the Demon Deacons with 23 points.

North Carolina State also improved to 9-4 with its 87-81 victory over visiting Campbell.  Lorenzo Brown led the Wolfpack with 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Richard Howell had 17 points and 17 rebounds.  Yes, that is not a misprint…. 17 rebounds.  In fact, North Carolina State outrebounded Campbell 40-22.  They also went an impressive 28 for 31 from the free throw line.  Only Campbell’s hot shooting–50.9% from the field and 64.3% from three-point range–kept this game close.

Finally, #5 North Carolina improved to 12-2 by defeating overmatched Elon, 100-62.  No surprises here.  The Tar Heels held Elon to 33.3% shooting, outrebounded them 57-31, had a 25-5 free throw attempt advantage, and only committed 8 fouls en route to a blowout win.  The usual suspects did the early damage, as Tyler Zeller had 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Harrison Barnes added 18 points.

The Confidential’s Basketball Top 30 for December 21, 2011

With over 300 teams in college basketball, the top 25 is just not enough anymore.  Here is the Confidential’s Top 30 for December 13, 2011:

  1. Syracuse (12-0).  Survived North Carolina State and held off tourney perennial Bucknell.
  2. Ohio State (11-1).  Cruising along, even without Sullinger.  Conference play is here now though.  Indiana on Saturday.
  3. Kentucky (10-1).  So much talent.  Huge game versus Louisville in two Saturdays.
  4. North Carolina (10-2).  Really not too impressive to start the season.  If they lose to Texas tonight, going to have to drop them down to 10th place or so.  The benefit of the doubt is getting weaker.
  5. Duke (10-1).  A real tough schedule to begin the season, but December finishes without much of a test.  If Louisville beats Georgetown and Kentucky, they will be leapfrogged.
  6. Louisville (11-0).  The win over Memphis was nice, but not enough to jump over UNC or Duke.  Georgetown in 7 days though.  And then Kentucky.
  7. Missouri (11-0).  The Tigers are undefeated and have better wins than Baylor and Florida.
  8. Florida (9-2).  Big game against Florida State on Thursday.  Both teams need that win.
  9. Baylor (10-0).  Baylor needs a signature win to start leapfrogging teams ahead of it in the standings.  Not sure West Virginia is it.
  10. UConn (9-1).  That mystery loss to UCF remains perplexing.  The Big East schedule will sort things out.
  11. Georgetown (9-1).  The Hoyas need to take care of business against disappointing Memphis.
  12. Pittsburgh (11-1).  Conference play starts next week against Notre Dame.
  13. Kansas (7-3).  Brutal schedule and lots of good wins.  But need to beat Davidson to stay in the top 10.
  14. Xavier (8-1).  The suspensions hurt, but scoring 42 points against Oral Roberts?
  15. Marquette (10-1). Win over Wisconsin is nice, but losing to LSU is a red flag.
  16. Wisconsin (10-2).  Losses to UNC and Marquette hurt, but Wisconsin has rebounded with a win over UNLV.  And we now know that UNLV is very tough.
  17. Indiana (11-0).  Wins over Kentucky and Notre Dame now.  This team may be for real.
  18. Michigan State (10-2).  MSU may not be top 5, but they have only lost to the top 5.  10 in a row since then.
  19. UNLV (12-2).  Wins over North Carolina and at Illinois are very good signs.  Might be looking at the #3 or #4 seed in the West.
  20. Murray State (12-0).  May run the table.  Who is going to beat them?
  21. Harvard (9-1).  Like Murray State, hard to see where the next loss comes from.
  22. Illinois (11-1).  Once the Big 10 season kicks off, the real Illinois will reveal itself.  For better or for worse.
  23. Mississippi State (11-1).  The loss to Akron remains the only blip.  Some decent wins.
  24. Virginia (9-1).  Hard to tell on the Cavs, but the ACC schedule starting in January will tell the story.
  25. Michigan (9-2).  No shame in losing to Duke.  Still needs more good wins.
  26. Creighton (9-1).  Big game against Northwestern this week.
  27. Northwestern (10-1).  Big game against Creighton this week.
  28. San Diego State (10-2).  Only losses are to undefeated Baylor and 1-loss Creighton.
  29. Stanford (10-1).  Looking like the best of a down Pac-12.
  30. Minnesota (11-1).  Eleven wins is eleven wins.  We’ll see.

If the season ended today, all of these teams could be in the Big Dance.  Time will tell as to how it plays out though…
