ACC Basketball Recap: First Round ACC Tournament Action

The first round of the ACC Conference Championship has concluded.  Four teams advanced on March 8, 2012: Maryland, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, and Miami.

North Carolina State is a team that many consider to be on the wrong side of the bubble.  Joe Lunardi has North Carolina State as the 4th team “out” of the Big Dance.  A loss to Boston College would have destroyed the Wolfpack’s chances.  Instead, North Carolina State improved to 21-11 with a 78-57 win over the Eagles. Scott Wood led North Carolina State with 22 points.  While North Carolina State will need to win at least one more game to have a chance at cracking the field of 68, they took care of business in beating Boston College.  The Eagles, whose season ends with a 9-22 record, were led by Ryan Anderson’s 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Joe Lunardi also considers Miami on the wrong side of the bubble.  So it was important for Miami to avoid that bubble bursting when it played struggling Georgia Tech.  The Hurricanes did exactly that, beating the Yellow Jackets, 54-36.  In other words, less offense than a typical MAC football game.  Shane Larkin led the Hurricanes, who improved to 19-11, with 12 points.  Mfon Udofia led Georgia Tech, whose season ends with an 11-20 record, with 13 points.

In other games: Virginia Tech improved to 16-16 by defeating Clemson, 68-63.  Point guard Erick Green led Virginia Tech with 24 points, while Tanner Smith led Clemson with 12 points.  Maryland defeated Wake Forest 82-60 to improve to 17-14.  Terrell Stoglin scored 25 points to lead Maryland, while Wake Forest–whose season ended at 13-18–was led by Travis McKie’s 22 points.  Also, Syracuse improved to 31-1 by defeating Connecticut 58-55.  Dion Waiters led Syracuse with 18 points.

Friday’s games:

  • #1 North Carolina v #8 Maryland, noon
  • #4 Virginia v #5 North Carolina State 2:00 pm
  • #2 Duke v #10 Virginia Tech, 7:00 pm
  • #1 Syracuse v #4 Cincinnati, 7:00 pm
  • #3 Florida State v #6 Miami, 9:00 pm

For North Carolina State and Miami, the only option is winning.

ACC Lacrosse Weekly Report 4, March 8, 2012

Amazingly, the ACC lacrosse season is already a few weeks old.

News:

The Inside Lacrosse poll has Virginia #1, receiving 19 of the 20 first place votes.  Maryland is #4, Syracuse is #6, North Carolina is #8, and Duke is #9.  The USILA Coaches Poll is the same, except that Virginia has all 9 first place votes and Duke is ranked #11.

Maryland 10, Duke 7.  “Senior Drew Snider had a hat trick to lead the No. 5 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to at 10-7 victory over No. 8 Duke in front of 4,137 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium Saturday afternoon.”

Lehigh 9, North Carolina 8.  “Lehigh outscored North Carolina 5-0 over a span of 25:11 from the second through fourth quarters and went on to beat the fourth-ranked Tar Heels 9-8 at Fetzer Field Saturday night. The loss was the first for the Tar Heels against an unranked team at Fetzer Field since March 5, 2004 when Navy downed Carolina 9-8 in overtime.”

Virginia 14, Syracuse 10.  “Colin Briggs scored three goals and assisted another to help the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (5-0) top the No. 3 Syracuse Orange (2-1) on Sunday evening, 14-10, in front of 5,855 fans inside Klöckner Stadium.”

The Confidential’s ACC Lacrosse Rankings:

1.  Virginia (6-0).  Virginia has been simply dominant this year.

2.  Syracuse (2-1).  Syracuse tested Virginia for a significant time, before ultimately falling.

3.  Maryland (3-1).  Despite the loss to UMBC, Maryland did beat Duke in a conference matchup.

4.  North Carolina (4-2).  North Carolina’s losses to Lehigh and Penn were disappointments.

5.  Duke (3-2).  No shame in losing to Maryland.  But that’s two losses now for Duke.

Lacrosse is Back: Weekly Report 3, February 29, 2012

ACC lacrosse is off and running.

News:

The Virginia Cavaliers remain ranked #1 in the latest Nike Top 20.  North Carolina is #4, Maryland is #5, Syracuse is #6, and Duke is #8.   In the coaches poll, Virginia is also #1.  However, Syracuse leapfrogs up to #3, ahead of North Carolina at #4 and Maryland at #5.  Duke is #10 in that poll.

Maryland 16-Georgetown 11.  Senior Joe Cummings set a career-high with six points to lead Maryland

Duke 12-Penn 8.  Duke University sophomore attackman Josh Dionne led Duke with four goals and Jordan Wolf added his first hat trick of the season.

North Carolina 9-Navy 8.  Thomas Wood and Marcus Holman led the way for UNC with nine combined points

Virginia 12-Stony Brook 5.  Colin Briggs scored a career-high seven points to lead the #1 Virginia Cavaliers to victory.

Duke 16-Jacksonville 7.  Sophomore Jordan Wolf led the 10th-ranked Blue Devils with a career-high five goals and two assists for seven points.

Syracuse 10-Army 9.    Army midfielder Alex Van Krevel’s shot with three seconds to play bounced off the helmet of Syracuse goalie, Dominick Lamolinara.

The Confidential’s ACC Lacrosse Rankings:

1.  North Carolina (4-0).  North Carolina has beaten Navy and Penn State.  Slightly better than Virginia’s opponents.

2.  Virginia (4-0).  Virginia has played a lot of games, but has not been tested.  Syracuse will change that.

3.  Maryland (2-0).  Maryland looked good in defeating Georgetown.  Gets the slight edge over Syracuse for now.

4. Syracuse (2-0).  Syracuse eked out a victory over perennial thorn-in-its-side Army.  Still adjusting to new faces.

5.  Duke (1-1).  Still at the bottom due to the defeat.  Eventually Duke will move up.

ACC Basketball Rankings: February 27, 2012

This is particularly complex with Pitt and Syracuse not yet in the ACC, but it can still be done.  Here is how we view the ACC basketball schools as of February 27, 2012:

1.  Syracuse (29-1)  Syracuse went on a 26-0 run to defeat South Florida.  Syracuse gave up a 17-point lead against UConn, but still won.  This team just wins right now.

2. Duke (25-4) Duke and North Carolina have identical 25-4 records, including the same 12-2 conference record.  But Duke beat North Carolina.

3. North Carolina (25-4)  North Carolina does get a chance at revenge this Saturday against Duke.  It should be winner take all for the ACC crown.

4. Florida State (19-9)  Have looked vulnerable lately.  A loss to Boston College and now a loss to Miami by 16.

5. Virginia (21-7)  At 8-6 in conference, Virginia is still a few wins behind Florida State.  Still lacks a high-quality win.

6. Miami (17-10)  Miami lost to Maryland earlier in the week, but rebounded nicely to take care of Florida State handily.  Needs a few more wins for March Madness to call.

7. North Carolina State (18-11).  The loss to North Carolina is excusable.  At this time of year, no excuse for losing to Clemson.

8. Clemson (13-13)  Clemson is now 7-7 in conference play.  They followed up the win over Virginia by beating Georgia Tech and North Carolina State.

9. Maryland (16-12)  After beating Miami, Maryland was primed to move up a few spots.  But then they lost to Georgia Tech.

10.  Virginia Tech (15-14)  This team has had more closes losses.  This past week was a 2-point loss to Virginia and an OT loss to Duke.

11. Pittsburgh (15-14)  Pittsburgh’s small momentum is over.  Hard to believe this team was once 13-2.

12. Wake Forest (13-15) They did beat Boston College by nearly 30.  Not a bad way to end the week.

13. Georgia Tech (10-18).  The losing streak is over.  And Georgia Tech beat a good Maryland team to accomplish that task.

14. Boston College (8-20)  Boston College had been showing some signs of life.  Losing by 29 to a sub .500 Wake Forest team is not such a sign.

ACC Daily News: February 23, 2012

Here are your news and notes regarding the Atlantic Coast Conference for February 23, 2012.

In basketball, the big news is tonight’s game between #5 Duke and #15 Florida State.  As you may recall, Florida State went on the road and defeated Duke on a shot by Michael Snaer at the buzzer.  This helped propel Florida State into the top 15 (along with the dominating win over North Carolina).  Needless to say, Duke is looking for revenge.  And, as of right now, both teams are tied for 2nd place in the conference standings with identical 10-2 records.  The winner will share #1 with North Carolina, who is 11-2.  The game is at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.

Syracuse improved to 28-1 overall and 15-1 in Big East play with a win over surprising South Florida.  Although it may be another year before Syracuse’s wins count for the conference, the Orange’s season does provide promise for the future.

In football, Randy Edsall was gracious enough to allow 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year Danny O’ Brien to transfer.  But he would not allow the sophomore quarterback to transfer to Vanderbilt.  Well, after receiving ample criticism from the media, Edsall finally did the honorable thing and will allow O’ Brien to consider Vanderbilt.  Its kind of like when the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes in one day.

Lacrosse is Back: Weekly Report 2, February 22, 2012

ACC lacrosse is off and running.

News:

The Virginia Cavaliers remain ranked #1 in the Nike Top 20.  See here.  North Carolina is #5, Syracuse is #6, Maryland is #7, and Duke is #8.   So, yeah, the ACC can claim 5 of the top 8 schools, which is nice.

North Carolina defeated Detroit, 18-8.  Jimmy Dunster led the Tar Heels with three goals, while Marcus Holman and Chad Tutton had four-point games.

Notre Dame defeated Duke 7-3.  Duke’s defense was fine, Notre Dame’s defense was just better.

Maryland defeated Hartford 12-6.  Maryland was led by John Haus, who tied his career high with four points (2 goals).  Notably, Curtis Holmes dominated face-offs, winning 19-of-20.

Virginia defeated Drexel 9-8.  With about 8 minutes to go, Virginia trailed 8-7.  Bobby Hill’s first career goal tied it at 8-8, while Rob Emery scored the game winner with 4:48 to go.

Syracuse defeated Albany 12-7.  Although Syracuse trailed 2-0, they went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.

3.  Syracuse (1-0).  Comparable win to Maryland, but Syracuse won the scrimmage.

4.  Maryland (1-0).  See above.

5.  Duke (1-1).  A loss is a loss is a loss.

ACC Basketball Rankings: February 20, 2012

This is particularly complex with Pitt and Syracuse not yet in the ACC, but it can still be done.  Here is how we view the ACC basketball schools as of February 20, 2012:

1.  Syracuse (27-1)  With road wins at Louisville and Rutgers (a difficult place to win), Syracuse continues their all-time best season start.  Upstart South Florida visits on Wednesday.

2. Duke (23-4) A very good win for the Blue Devils over North Carolina State.  Boston College, however, did not put up much of a fight at all.

3. North Carolina (23-4)  Challenging week ahead for the Tar Heels, with road trips to North Carolina State and Virginia.

4. Florida State (19-7)  Florida State got back to its winning ways against North Carolina State.  Duke visits on Thursday.

5. Virginia (20-7)  Virginia embarrassed Maryland on Saturday.  The Terps are used to embarrassment, having fired Ralph Friedgen and replaced him Randy Edsall.

6. North Carolina State (18-9).  Very tough week with losses to Duke and Florida State.  And next up is North Carolina.

7.  Miami (16-9)  Miami did the expected–losing to North Carolina and defeating Wake Forest.

8. Maryland (15-11)  Really outplayed by Virginia on Saturday.  Looking squarely at the NIT, barring a stretch run.

9.  Virginia Tech (15-12)  Two wins on the week for Virginia Tech, sandwiched around a loss by 1 point at Florida State.  A good week overall.

10.  Clemson (13-13)  A great win over Virginia moves Clemson up to 10.

11. Pittsburgh (15-12)  Pitt is back to losing often.

12. Boston College (8-19)  Boston College can keep its edge over Wake Forest by beating the Demon Deacons on Saturday.

13. Wake Forest (12-15) Wake Forest got another conference win–but it was against cellar-dweller Georgia Tech.

14. Georgia Tech (9-17).  Georgia Tech continues to lose.  The less said the better.

Lacrosse is Back: Weekly Report 1, February 13, 2012

It’s hard to believe, but ACC lacrosse is already back.  There were three games played over the weekend.

North Carolina got the season off to a winning start by defeating Penn State, 14-10.  Junior Davey Emala led the Tar Heels with five points, including four goals.

Duke also got the season off on a winning note by defeating Rutgers, 16-8.  Senior Robert Rotanz led the Blue Devils with four goals

Sunday, February 12, 2012

North Carolina defeated Mercer 20-7.  Freshmen Joey Sankey and Chad Tutton each scored three goals in the win over, Mercer, while Sankey led the team with 6 points.

Also, Syracuse and Maryland played a scrimmage on Sunday, which Syracuse won: 11-9.

The Confidential’s ACC Lacrosse Standings:

1.  North Carolina (2-0).  The season is young, but having the most wins has to count for something.  The Tar Heels get the nod.

2.  Duke (1-0).  Similarly, one win is better than zero wins.  Even if it is against Rutgers.

3.  Syracuse (0-0).  Well, they did beat Maryland in that scrimmage.

4.  Virginia (0-0).  Nothing to go on here to move them ahead of Syracuse or behind Maryland.

5.  Maryland (0-0).  Well, they did lose to Syracuse in that scrimmage.

ACC Basketball Rankings: February 13, 2012

This is particularly complex with Pitt and Syracuse not yet in the ACC, but it can still be done.  Here is how we view the ACC basketball schools as of February 13, 2012:

1.  Syracuse (25-1)  It took overtime for Syracuse to beat Georgetown, but the Orange pulled away from UConn.  Up next is their nemesis: Louisville.

2. Duke (21-4)  A buzzer beater is still a win.  Duke was able to beat North Carolina on the road and then handle Maryland at home.Looked dominant in wins over Wake Forest and Maryland.  Next up?  Duke and Virginia.

3. North Carolina (21-4)  The loss to Duke was a disappointment.  The Tar Heels rebounded nicely in a win against Virginia.

4. Florida State (17-7)  Florida State is handling the good teams.  Unfortunately, it has been Clemson and Boston College that tripped them up.

5. Virginia (19-5)  The loss to the Tar Heels was not unexpected.  A road trip to Clemson awaits.

6. North Carolina State (18-7)  North Carolina State is making a nice run at the Big Dance.  The problem is that its games this week are against Duke (away) and Florida State (home).

7.  Miami (15-8)  Miami followed up the Duke win with a win over Virginia Tech.  But Florida State was too much for the Hurricanes.

8. Maryland (14-10)  Maryland is running short on opportunities to get the wins.  This week is Boston College (home) and Virginia (away).  The .500 weeks are not getting it done.

9. Pittsburgh (15-11)  The win over Villanova has faded.  The Panthers followed that up with road losses to USF and Seton Hall.

10.  Clemson (12-12)  Clemson split the week again, losing to Maryland and crushing Wake Forest.

11.  Virginia Tech (14-11)  The conference games have destroyed this team.  They finally had some luck against Boston College with a last second-win.

12. Boston College (8-17)  The win over Florida State has to be worth sliding up a few slots.  And they almost nipped Virginia Tech on the road.

13. Wake Forest (11-14) Not only is Wake Forest losing, they are getting blown out.  That is not going to get it done.

14. Georgia Tech (9-15)  Georgia Tech continues to struggle.  This season will end in disappointment, unfortunately.

ACC Basketball Rankings: February 6, 2012

This is particularly complex with Pitt and Syracuse not yet in the ACC, but it can still be done.  Here is how we view the ACC basketball schools as of January 30, 2012:

1.  Syracuse (23-1)  With Fab Melo back, the Orange returned to their dominant ways.  However, all seven remaining games for the Orange are against teams in the top half of the Big East standings.  This will not end easy for Syracuse.

2. North Carolina (20-3)  Looked dominant in wins over Wake Forest and Maryland.  Next up?  Duke and Virginia.

3. Florida State (16-6)  That’s seven straight conference wins for the Seminoles.  In the process, they have defeated nationally ranked Virginia and North Carolina at home, while defeating Maryland and Duke on the road.

4. Duke (19-4)  The home loss to Florida State at the buzzer was a shocker.  Losing to Miami?  This isn’t football.

5. Virginia (18-4)  No shame in losing to Florida State on the road.  Virginia fared much better than the Tar Heels.

6. North Carolina State (17-7)  A good week for the Wolfpack, who beat both BC and Wake Forest to get back to their winning ways.  All five starters were in double-digits against Wake too.

7.  Miami (14-7)  The win over Duke, at Duke, was the marquee win that Miami needed.  Now they need to keep up the 6-3 conference pace down the stretch.

8. Maryland (13-9)  While the loss to North Carolina stings, it was the road loss to Miami that will be regretted.  That was a winnable game, as evidenced by the overtime.

9. Pittsburgh (15-9)  Don’t look know, but the Panthers have won four straight.  If they keep this up, the Big Dance is not out of the question.

10. Virginia Tech (13-10)  The Hokies took care of business against Clemson.  That 2-6 conference record still hurts.

11. Clemson (11-11)  Swept by both Virginia schools.  A tough road for the Tigers this past week.

12. Wake Forest (11-12)  Wake Forest was overmatched by North Carolina and North Carolina State.  Not a surprise.

13. Georgia Tech (9-14)  Georgia Tech is part of the 3-way tie in the ACC cellar at 2-7 in conference play.  The win over BC gets them to 13th.

14. Boston College (7-16)  The Eagles could have gotten out of the cellar with a win against Georgia Tech.  Alas, it was not meant to be.
