ACC Basketball Recap: Third Round ACC Tournament Action

The third round of the ACC Conference Championship has concluded.  The Championship games is now set, with North Carolina facing Florida State.

Of the two semifinal games, the only one with NCAA tournament implications was the North Carolina-North Carolina State matchup.  After losing to North Carolina, 69-67, the Wolfpack are going to have to sweat it out today when the field of 68 is announced.  This was a golden opportunity for a win because the Tar Heels were forced to play without John Henson, who has a sprained wrist.  But North Carolina still had Tyler Zeller, who contributed 23 points and 9 rebounds.  Meanwhile, Harrison Barnes added 16 points and Kendall Marshall had 10 assists.  The Wolfpack were led by CJ Leslie’s 22 points and 7 rebounds, all the more impressive since he fouled out with 8 minutes to go.  The Wolfpack bench lost track of the foul totals.  North Carolina improved to 29-4, while North Carolina State fell to 22-12.

In the other semifinal matchup, Florida State defeated Duke, 62-59.  Florida State led by as many as 10 points in the second-half, but Duke had two chances to tie the game in the final seconds.  Michael Snaer led the Seminoles with 16 points.  Austin Rivers led the Blue Devils with 19 points.  With the loss, Duke drops to 27-6.  With the win, Florida State improves to 23-9.

The results of these games mean that Florida State with play North Carolina for the ACC Championship.  In their prior meeting, Florida State embarrassed North Carolina 90-57.  Naturally, the Tar Heels will be looking for revenge.

ACC Basketball Recap: Second Round ACC Tournament Action

The second round of the ACC Conference Championship has concluded.  Four teams advanced on March 9, 2012: North Carolina State, Duke, North Carolina, and Florida State.

As noted yesterday, North Carolina State is a team that many consider to be on the wrong side of the bubble.  So it was huge for the Wolfpack to come up with a victory over Virginia in the ACC Tournament, 67-64.  The big hero for North Carolina State was CJ Leslie, who scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds.  With the win, North Carolina State will move on to play North Carolina.  Mike Scott led Virginia with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The news was not as good for Miami.  Florida State defeated the Hurricanes, 82-71.  The Seminoles were led by Michael Snaer’s 20 points.   Shane Larkin led Miami with 16 points.  Joe Lunardi has Miami as the second team in the “Last Four Out.”  For more analysis on Miami’s chances, see here.

In the other quarterfinal games, Duke defeated Virginia Tech, 60-56.  North Carolina defeated Maryland, 85-69.  In New York City, Syracuse suffered only its second loss of the season, losing to Cincinnati, 71-68.  The biggest news of these three games, however, was the wrist injury suffered by John Henson.  Right now, it is being called a sprain.

Saturday’s games:

  • #1 North Carolina v #5 North Carolina State 1:00 pm
  • #2 Duke v #3 Florida State, 3:00 pm

The Championship game will, of course, be Sunday afternoon.

ACC Basketball Recap: First Round ACC Tournament Action

The first round of the ACC Conference Championship has concluded.  Four teams advanced on March 8, 2012: Maryland, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, and Miami.

North Carolina State is a team that many consider to be on the wrong side of the bubble.  Joe Lunardi has North Carolina State as the 4th team “out” of the Big Dance.  A loss to Boston College would have destroyed the Wolfpack’s chances.  Instead, North Carolina State improved to 21-11 with a 78-57 win over the Eagles. Scott Wood led North Carolina State with 22 points.  While North Carolina State will need to win at least one more game to have a chance at cracking the field of 68, they took care of business in beating Boston College.  The Eagles, whose season ends with a 9-22 record, were led by Ryan Anderson’s 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Joe Lunardi also considers Miami on the wrong side of the bubble.  So it was important for Miami to avoid that bubble bursting when it played struggling Georgia Tech.  The Hurricanes did exactly that, beating the Yellow Jackets, 54-36.  In other words, less offense than a typical MAC football game.  Shane Larkin led the Hurricanes, who improved to 19-11, with 12 points.  Mfon Udofia led Georgia Tech, whose season ends with an 11-20 record, with 13 points.

In other games: Virginia Tech improved to 16-16 by defeating Clemson, 68-63.  Point guard Erick Green led Virginia Tech with 24 points, while Tanner Smith led Clemson with 12 points.  Maryland defeated Wake Forest 82-60 to improve to 17-14.  Terrell Stoglin scored 25 points to lead Maryland, while Wake Forest–whose season ended at 13-18–was led by Travis McKie’s 22 points.  Also, Syracuse improved to 31-1 by defeating Connecticut 58-55.  Dion Waiters led Syracuse with 18 points.

Friday’s games:

  • #1 North Carolina v #8 Maryland, noon
  • #4 Virginia v #5 North Carolina State 2:00 pm
  • #2 Duke v #10 Virginia Tech, 7:00 pm
  • #1 Syracuse v #4 Cincinnati, 7:00 pm
  • #3 Florida State v #6 Miami, 9:00 pm

For North Carolina State and Miami, the only option is winning.

ACC Lacrosse Weekly Report 4, March 8, 2012

Amazingly, the ACC lacrosse season is already a few weeks old.

News:

The Inside Lacrosse poll has Virginia #1, receiving 19 of the 20 first place votes.  Maryland is #4, Syracuse is #6, North Carolina is #8, and Duke is #9.  The USILA Coaches Poll is the same, except that Virginia has all 9 first place votes and Duke is ranked #11.

Maryland 10, Duke 7.  “Senior Drew Snider had a hat trick to lead the No. 5 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to at 10-7 victory over No. 8 Duke in front of 4,137 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium Saturday afternoon.”

Lehigh 9, North Carolina 8.  “Lehigh outscored North Carolina 5-0 over a span of 25:11 from the second through fourth quarters and went on to beat the fourth-ranked Tar Heels 9-8 at Fetzer Field Saturday night. The loss was the first for the Tar Heels against an unranked team at Fetzer Field since March 5, 2004 when Navy downed Carolina 9-8 in overtime.”

Virginia 14, Syracuse 10.  “Colin Briggs scored three goals and assisted another to help the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (5-0) top the No. 3 Syracuse Orange (2-1) on Sunday evening, 14-10, in front of 5,855 fans inside Klöckner Stadium.”

The Confidential’s ACC Lacrosse Rankings:

1.  Virginia (6-0).  Virginia has been simply dominant this year.

2.  Syracuse (2-1).  Syracuse tested Virginia for a significant time, before ultimately falling.

3.  Maryland (3-1).  Despite the loss to UMBC, Maryland did beat Duke in a conference matchup.

4.  North Carolina (4-2).  North Carolina’s losses to Lehigh and Penn were disappointments.

5.  Duke (3-2).  No shame in losing to Maryland.  But that’s two losses now for Duke.

All Three ACC Favorites Win on Sunday

Today was a big day for three ACC teams.  While Florida State and Virginia are playing for seeding, North Carolina State is playing to get on the right side of the proverbial bubble.  All three teams won.

As noted above, North Carolina State really needed to win on Sunday.  And they did, beating Virginia Tech, 70-58.  With the win, the Wolfpack improved to 20-11 and 9-7 in conference play.  Scott Wood led North Carolina State with 19 points, but CJ Leslie was a huge contributor with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Although Virginia Tech has struggled to a 15-16 record, the Hokies play everyone tough at home and rarely lose by a significant margin.  Cadarian Raines scored 15 points to lead the Hokies.

In Maryland, #24 Virginia improved to 22-8 and 9-7 in conference play by getting an overtime road win over the Terrapins, 75-72.  The big hero of the day was Virginia Senior Mike Scott, who scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.  He also scored 7 of Virginia’s 14 overtime points.  Terrell Stoglin scored 25 points to lead the Terps, who dropped to 16-14 overall and 6-10 in conference play.

In Tallahassee, #22 Florida State held off suddenly-rolling Clemson, 80-72.  Clemson was down by 16 at the half, but rallied to get it within 3 with 30 seconds to go.  But Florida State scored the final five points to improve to 21-9 and 12-4 in conference play.  With the loss, Clemson drops to 16-14 and a respectable 8-8 in conference play. Michael Snaer led Florida State with 23 points, while K.J. McDaniels and Andre Young scored 16 points to lead Clemson.

With these results, here are the final standings for the ACC regular season (including the March 4, 2012, games):

Lacrosse is Back: Weekly Report 3, February 29, 2012

ACC lacrosse is off and running.

News:

The Virginia Cavaliers remain ranked #1 in the latest Nike Top 20.  North Carolina is #4, Maryland is #5, Syracuse is #6, and Duke is #8.   In the coaches poll, Virginia is also #1.  However, Syracuse leapfrogs up to #3, ahead of North Carolina at #4 and Maryland at #5.  Duke is #10 in that poll.

The Confidential’s ACC Lacrosse Rankings:

1.  North Carolina (4-0).  North Carolina has beaten Navy and Penn State.  Slightly better than Virginia’s opponents.

2.  Virginia (4-0).  Virginia has played a lot of games, but has not been tested.  Syracuse will change that.

3.  Maryland (2-0).  Maryland looked good in defeating Georgetown.  Gets the slight edge over Syracuse for now.

4. Syracuse (2-0).  Syracuse eked out a victory over perennial thorn-in-its-side Army.  Still adjusting to new faces.

5.  Duke (1-1).  Still at the bottom due to the defeat.  Eventually Duke will move up.

ACC Basketball Recap: February 25, 2012

A very exciting day of college basketball in the ACC on February 25, 2012.

The day began with #5 Duke hosting Virginia Tech and getting everything it could handle in a 70-65 overtime win.  Once again, it was Austin Rivers and Seth Curry stepping up for Duke, scoring 23 points and 19 points, respectively.  Of course, it also helps to have a 34-16 free throw attempt advantage.  Mason Plumlee added 15 rebounds as Duke stayed atop the ACC with a 25-4 overall record and 12-2 in conference play.  For the Hokies, it was another tough loss, dropping them to 15-14 overall.   Dorenzo Hudson, Erick Green, and Cadarian Raines each scored 16 points for Virginia Tech.

In another overtime game, Clemson once again pulled off an upset–beating North Carolina State, 72-69.  At 18-11, North Carolina State suffers a defeat that will hurt their Big Dance chances.  But credit pesky Clemson for winning and matching the Wolfpack’s 7-7 conference record.  At 15-13, the Tigers are not going to be part of March Madness, barring an ACC tournament victory.  Milton Jennings led Clemson with 17 points.  North Carolina State was led by CJ Leslie and Lorenzo Brown, who each scored 18.  With games against Miami and Virginia Tech, North Carolina State can still get to twenty regular season wins.

In two games of lesser importance to the conference and post-season picture, Wake Forest dominated Boston College, 85-56.  CJ Harris scored 23 points for the Demon Deacons, while Ryan Anderson scored 18 for the Eagles.  And Georgia Tech upset Maryland, 63-61.  Kammeon Holsey had a double-double for Georgia Tech with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Terrell Stoglin led Maryland, as usual, with 18 points.

ESPN Game Day was on hand for the night game featuring #2 Syracuse and UConn, which Syracuse won 71-69.  Viewers got their money’s worth as Syracuse jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead, UConn rallied to tie it last in the second half, and the game came down to the final possession.  Syracuse was led by Kris Joseph’s 21 points.  With the win, the Orange improve to 29-1 on the season and clinch their status as regular season champions of the Big East.  The ACC cannot get these guys here soon enough.

Finally, the big match up of the day featured #7 North Carolina and #25 Virginia.  As expected, this was a game of contrasts, with Virginia hoping to control tempo.  The Cavaliers certainly did that, holding the Tar Heels to 54 points.  The problem was that Virginia only scored 51, resulting in a loss.  Virginia had multiple opportunities in the final seconds to tie, but fell short.  Still, it was an impressive game for Virginia as they get prepared for the Big Dance.  Jontel Evans led Virginia, who dropped to a very respectable 21-7 overall, with 13 points.  Tyler Zeller led the Tar Heels with 20 points.  North Carolina improved to 25-4 overall and 12-2 in conference play–the exact same records as Duke.  Both teams hope to win their midweek games, resulting in a match up for the conference title next Saturday.

Lacrosse is Back: Weekly Report 2, February 22, 2012

ACC lacrosse is off and running.

News:

The Virginia Cavaliers remain ranked #1 in the Nike Top 20.  See here.  North Carolina is #5, Syracuse is #6, Maryland is #7, and Duke is #8.   So, yeah, the ACC can claim 5 of the top 8 schools, which is nice.

North Carolina defeated Detroit, 18-8.  Jimmy Dunster led the Tar Heels with three goals, while Marcus Holman and Chad Tutton had four-point games.

Notre Dame defeated Duke 7-3.  Duke’s defense was fine, Notre Dame’s defense was just better.

Maryland defeated Hartford 12-6.  Maryland was led by John Haus, who tied his career high with four points (2 goals).  Notably, Curtis Holmes dominated face-offs, winning 19-of-20.

Virginia defeated Drexel 9-8.  With about 8 minutes to go, Virginia trailed 8-7.  Bobby Hill’s first career goal tied it at 8-8, while Rob Emery scored the game winner with 4:48 to go.

1.  North Carolina (3-0).  Until North Carolina loses, Virginia will just have to wait.

2.  Virginia (2-0).  A win over Drexel and a romp over VMI put Virginia ahead of the rest.

3.  Syracuse (1-0).  Comparable win to Maryland, but Syracuse won the scrimmage.

4.  Maryland (1-0).  See above.

5.  Duke (1-1).  A loss is a loss is a loss.

Weekend Recap: February 18-19

Here is a recap of the ACC basketball games this weekend (February 18 & 19, 2012).

Saturday

In the big game of the day–the battle for 19 wins–#20 Florida State notched a key win over host North Carolina State, 76-62.   Ian Miller’s 17 points led the four Seminoles who scored in double-figures.  Florida State led by 11 at the half and by as many as 20 points in the second half.  The Wolfpack, who dropped to 18-9 with the loss, were led by CJ Leslie’s 21 points.  Florida State is now 19-7.

#8 North Carolina dropped Clemson back to .500 overall (13-13) with a 74-52 win over the Tigers.  North Carolina is now an unreal 56-0 against Clemson in Chapel Hill.  Harrison Barnes led the Tar Heels with 24 points, but Kendall Marshall was a master distributor with 13 assists.  Clemson was led in scoring by Andre Young’s thirteen points.  With the win, North Carolina is now 23-4.

#22 Virginia handily defeated Maryland, 71-44.  The amazing thing about this game is that it was tied at halftime.  The Cavs outscored the Terps 40-13 in the second half.  Maryland, which dropped to 15-11, was led by Terrell Stoglin’s 14 points.  Virginia, as usual, was led by Mike Scott’s 25 points and 7 rebounds.  Virginia also improved to 20-6 on the season.

In other Saturday action, Miami improved to 16-9 with a 74-56 win over Wake Forest.  And Virginia Tech held off Georgia Tech in overtime, 74-73.

Sunday

#2 Syracuse escaped Rutgers with a 74-64 win.  The margin of victory does not reveal how well Rutgers played in defeat–this game was close from start to finish.  CJ Fair came off the bench to lead the Orange with 21 point and 8 rebounds.  With the win, Syracuse improves to an impressive 27-1 on the season.

#5 Duke had no trouble with Boston College, defeating the hosts 75-50.  As usual, Duke dominated the boards–outrebounding the Eagles 40-21.  Seth Curry led the Blue Devils with 18 points, while Austin Rivers added 16.  Boston College was led by Ryan Anderson’s 21 points.  With the win, Duke keeps pace with North Carolina by improving to 23-4.

ACC Basketball Recap: February 16, 2012

February 16, 2012, was a great day of college basketball in the ACC.

First, #5 Duke rallied from a 20-point deficit to defeat North Carolina State, 78-73.  In fact, the Wolfpack led at the half by 16 points.  But Duke really outplayed North Carolina State down the stretch to prevent a big upset.  Seth Curry was the scoring leader for Duke with 26 points, while Austin Rivers added 16.  Lorenzo Brown led the Wolfpack, who dropped to 18-8 with the loss, with 19 points.  Duke improved to 22-4 with the win.

Second, #20 Florida State won in the final seconds again, defeating Virginia Tech, 48-47.  Once again, it was Michael Snaer providing the heroics with a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left.  Against Duke, Snaer did it as time expired.  Snaer and Ian Miller were the scoring leaders for Florida State with 9 and 11 points, respectively.  Erick Green led Virginia Tech, who dropped to 14-12 with the loss, with 18 points.  Florida State is now 18-7 on the season.

Third, on a less exciting note, Maryland defeated Boston College 81-65.  This one was never really in doubt as Maryland led by 14 at the half.  Ryan Anderson led the 8-18 Eagles with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Terrell Stoglin led Maryland with 24 points.  With the win, Maryland improves to 15-10 overall and keeps its Big Dance dreams alive.

Finally, Pittsburgh’s woes continued as they suffered a 66-48 home loss to rival West Virginia.  This game was actually close at the half (26-25), but West Virginia pulled away in the second-half.  Pittsburgh drops to 15-12 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
