The Confidential’s 2016 Football Over-Under: Syracuse

Last year, the Confidential unveiled over-unders for each ACC school.  For Syracuse, the over-under was set at 5.5 regular season wins.  Ultimately, the Orange fell short of that, resulting in a coaching change.  This year, there is optimism with a new coaching staff and scheme–but concern regarding the defense and the ordinarily challenging OOC schedule.  The Confidential sets the over-under for Syracuse at 4.5 regular season wins.

Here is the schedule for 2016:

  • 9/2/16: Colgate
  • 9/9/16: Louisville
  • 9/17/16: South Florida
  • 9/24/16: @ UConn
  • 10/1/16: Notre Dame (neutral site)
  • 10/8/16: @ Wake Forest
  • 10/15/16: Virginia Tech
  • 10/22/16: @ Boston College
  • 11/5/16: @ Clemson
  • 11/12/16: NC State
  • 11/19/16: Florida State
  • 11/26/16: @ Pitt

Very likely wins: Colgate, UConn

Very likely losses: Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida State, Pitt

Verdict: Syracuse has struggled to beat Pitt on the road (since 2001) and is a long shot to beat Notre Dame, Clemson, or Florida State.  Still, it is not hard to believe that the team cannot find a few wins among USF, Wake Forest, Boston College, and North Carolina State.  Also, look for Dino Babers’ squad to pull at least one mild upset–perhaps Louisville or Virginia Tech.  A bowl game may be a year away though.  The Confidential sets the over-under at 4.5 wins.

The Confidential’s 2016 Football Over-Under: Notre Dame

Last year, the Confidential unveiled over-unders for each ACC school.  For Notre Dame, the over-under was set at 9.5 regular season wins.  Ultimately, the Fighting Irish ended up with 10 regular season wins, with losses at Clemson and Stanford being the only regular season blemishes.  But now it is on to 2016.  The Confidential sets the over-under for Notre Dame at 10.5 regular season wins.

Here is the schedule for 2016:

  • 9/4/16: @ Texas
  • 9/10/16: Nevada
  • 9/17/16: Michigan State
  • 9/24/16: Duke
  • 10/1/16: Syracuse (neutral site)
  • 10/8/16: @ NC State
  • 10/15/16: Stanford
  • 10/29/16: Miami
  • 11/5/16: Army
  • 11/12/16: Navy
  • 11/19/16: Virginia Tech
  • 11/26/16: @ USC

Very likely wins: Nevada, Syracuse, @ NC State, Army, Navy

Very likely losses: Texas or USC

Verdict: Wow… pretty rare to see a football schedule with only three road games.  The neutral site game against Syracuse will likely be a de facto home game.  How can Notre Dame not have a great season?   Well, do not sleep on Michigan State, Duke, Miami, and Va Tech.  And Stanford is always a potential loss.  Meanwhile, one of Texas or USC–elite programs struggling recently–can pull off a home win over Notre Dame.  Still, this is a very favorable schedule.  The over/under, therefore, is set at 10.5 wins.

Final Confidential Bracket Contest Results!

Some folks hate North Carolina enough to be glad to see them lose last night, but other ACC fans would have preferred to see another notch in the conference belt.  Either way, congratulations to Villanova for winning it all.  As for the Confidential Bracket Contest, Lenville was able to hold off the competition and squeak to a 150-149 win.  As such, he wins the final prize!  Congrats!

ACC Post-Season Tournament Update

As you are probably aware, the post-season tournaments have been announced–with most attention deservedly focused on the Big Dance!  In fact, you are probably entering bracket tournaments as we speak.  Feel free to enter the Confidential’s annual contest–it is free, but also has a $25 prize via PayPal to the winner!  See here.  In any event, here is a recap of who from the ACC is going where:

The Big Dance

  • North Carolina earned a #1 seed in the East and tipoffs of Thursday in Raleigh against a play-in team to be determined.
  • Virginia also earned a #1 seed, in the Midwest, where it will begin play in Raleigh on Thursday against Hampton.
  • Miami earned a #3 seed in the South and was shipped all the way up to Providence, where it will face off against Buffalo on Thursday.
  • Duke will join Miami n Providence as the #4 seed, where it will face North Carolina-Wilmington on Thursday.
  • Notre Dame is a #6 seed in the East, where it will face a play-in opponent in Brooklyn on Friday.
  • Oddly, Pittsburgh is the third ACC team in the East, where it is a #10 seed playing in St. Louis on Friday against a tough Wisconsin team.
  • Syracuse was on the bubble, but made it in as a 10 seed in the Midwest, where it will begin play on Friday in St. Louis against Dayton.

The N.I.T.

  • Florida State will host Davidson.
  • Georgia Tech will host Houston.
  • Virginia Tech will host Princeton.

Other Tournaments

No ACC teams are participating in the CBI or CIT, and the field for the Vegas tournament has not yet been announced.

#9 Virginia vs Pitt recap…

This could have been a great win for the Pitt Panthers knocking off the #9 ranked Cavaliers but once again only two players showed up to play, Jamel Artis and Michael Young. Pitt hung in there through the first half only down 2 pts at halftime, 29-27. The 2nd half was a different story as Virginia took off from the start and never looked back. Virginia shot 48% from the field with the Panthers only shooting 39%. Pitt continues to show their biggest weakness as they have no outside shooting at all unless Artis decides to get hot. Pitt was 2-13 behind the arc while Virginia was 9-16 which was a big difference in the game. Until Jamie Dixon finds a way bring in some outside scoring threats this team will never make it far in the big tourney or ACC.  It won’t get much easier for the Panthers next week as they travel to play Miami and UNC.
