Lindsay, Jones exit – MLB draft kind to Diamond Heels

This time last year, coach Mike Fox and the Diamond Heels were reeling after losing 10 commits to the 2014 MLB draft which showed up significantly (in a bad way) in both the regular season and ACC tournament in the form of pitching. After losing many talented freshman, there just seemed to not be enough manpower in that particular area to sustain momentum down the stretch. This ultimately led to the Heels missing taking part in the NCAAT for the first time since 2001.

Even though the top 2 recruits the Diamond Heels had signed ended up being drafted, the class is still loaded and with some much needed relief in the form of pitchers. One of those pitching commits (two total) ranks in the Top 75 nationally.

The in-state class is led by 2nd ranked RHP and 10th ranked player overall in the state of North Carolina- Cole Aker and will be looked at to help add stability at the mound similar to what they enjoyed back in 2014.

I’ll have a breakdown of the entire recruiting class this summer along with the other UNC teams as we gear up for the new season.

Conference Realignment: A League of their Own

The Confidential has had some fun recently exploring different topics for hypothetical realignment scenarios such as relegation and team trading. While the tectonic shifts of conference realignment have settled since the ACC added a Grant-of-Rights, and the Big XII seems to have resolved their Conference Championship Game dilemma, there has been chatter among some of the private schools that changes could still be on the horizon.

Hello Confidential!

I’d just like to introduce myself since I’ve now officially joined The Confidential as a contributor from a North Carolina Tar Heels perspective.

Over the past two years I’ve been handling the unc_tarheelfan Twitter handle and every now and then I’ve found 140 characters just isn’t enough. Nor is tweeting out an entire paragraph of information in broken tweets. I looked at many alternatives that would work in correlation with that handle and decided that becoming a blog contributor would serve both myself and the blog community. I’m grateful to have had an invitation extended and I look forward to covering North Carolina athletics and the entire ACC community for and with you in the months ahead.

Long live the ACC!

All-Time Syracuse Orange Villains

Every fan base has its enemies, often far more perceived than real.  Sometimes the enemy is from within–a person that betrays the trust provided by the school.  More often, the enemy is a player or coach of a rival.  So who are Syracuse’s enemies (let’s just call them villains)?

Around the ACC: The NCAA Lacrosse Tournaments

There are several NCAA tournaments in play right now.

Men’s Lacrosse.

With all 5 ACC teams having good/great seasons (all seeded 7th or higher), expectations were high.  #1 Notre Dame did what it needed to, defeating Towson, 12-10.  #2 Syracuse had its way with Marist, 20-8.  #3 North Carolina held serve against Colgage, 19-12.  #5 seeded Duke was upset by Ohio State, 16-11.   #7 Virginia was obliterated by Johns Hopkins, 19-7.  So that’s three of the final 8 teams for the ACC.

Next up, Notre Dame will play unseeded Albany on May 16, with the winner to face the winner of Ohio State vs. Denver.  #2 Syracuse will play Johns Hopkins, with North Carolina playing Maryland in the other quarterfinal.

Womens Lacrosse.

The women are also down to 8 teams, including (again) 3 ACC teams.  #1 seeded Maryland will play #8 Northwestern in one quarterfinal, while unseeded Loyola will play #4 Syracuse.  In the other quarterfinals, #3 Duke will play Princeton and #2 North Carolina will play Penn State.  Virginia was eliminated by Penn State.

Confidential Contest: NFL Draft and ACC Schools

The Confidential LOVES to have contests.  We play fantasy football.  We have a bracket contest.  Heck, maybe we will have one for the Kentucky Derby to keep our Louisville fans happy.  Sometimes we play for Paypal CA$H, sometimes we play for pride.  This is one for pride–unless we get 25 people posting entries here or on Twitter.

The rules are simple… state the order in a comment or in a public post on Twitter of the first 15 ACC football players (14 full-time ACC schools + Notre Dame) drafted in the NFL Draft.  In other words (1. Winston, 2. Parker, 3. Flowers, etc.).  This may be easy at the top of the draft, but it will get harder at the bottom obviously.

Whomever gets the most correct, wins.  First tiebreaker is whomever has the most correct based on order drafted compared with order listed.  Second tiebreaker is based on who does best at the top of the draft.

Enter away.  May the best ACC fan win…
