The Football Over-Unders for 2015: Notre Dame

This article is another in a series of articles in which the Confidential opines regarding the over/under for football wins in 2015.  We’ll take a cursory look at the schedule and determine what we think is the point where folks will struggle to select “over” or “under.”  We hope people will share their comments as to “why” they are going over/under.  If you disagree with our over/under choice, of course, feel free to let us know too.  The next team up: Notre Dame.  We are going with an over/under of 9.5 regular season wins.

Summary:  Notre Dame’s schedule is not TOO awful this year from a difficulty standpoint.  Unlike the full-time ACC schools, Notre Dame has several winnable games OOC–UMass, Navy, Temple.  Then, games against Wake Forest and @ Virginia look interesting.  The opener against Texas should go the Irish’s way too.  So that’s 6 wins.  Can the Irish win 4 of the remaining 6? Probably.  But note how the second half gets much tougher, with road trips to Temple, Pitt, BC, and Stanford.  We see loses to Clemson, Stanford, and at least one other team… with one more game being the swing.  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 9.5 wins.

Summary:  Louisville’s schedule is tough, but Miami’s might be tougher.  OOC road games against Florida Atlantic and Cincinnati, sandwiched around a home game against Nebraska.  Then, the first four conference games are @ FSU, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and @ Duke.  Only 6 home games overall.  This is a very tough schedule for Miami–even with the promising offense.  Assume a 2-0 start–do you see 5 wins the rest of the way?  UNC, Duke, and Pitt are winnable–but on the road.  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 6.5 wins.

Summary:  Could you imagine if Louisville beats both Auburn and Clemson in the first three weeks of the season?  It would be difficult to envision Louisville not being in the top 5.  This is a fairly difficult schedule, as trips to NC State and Florida State also loom in the first six weeks.  If Louisville is 3-3, they can still get back to 9-3 by sweeping the second-half.  If Louisville is 4-2, then 10-2 is the upside.  The heart may say wins over Auburn, Florida State, and Clemson.  The brain says two out of those three are losses… or two are wins and then a surprise loss elsewhere.  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 9.5 wins.

Summary: Virginia Tech has a decent OOC slate, with Ohio State, Purdue, and East Carolina, the latter two coming on the road.  It is not difficult to envision a 2-2 start for the Hokies.  The Coastal is its typical self–who knows?  We do know that Va Tech avoided Florida State, Clemson, and Louisville in cross-divisional games.  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 6.5 wins.

Summary: In a make or break year for head coach Mike London, Virginia faces as tough a schedule as anyone in the country out-of-conference.  On the other hand, the Wahoos avoided Florida State and Clemson in the crossover conference game.  Every Coastal game is a toss up, as always.  Syracuse is very winnable, but the Orange will be better.  Louisville is very losable, but did that matter much last year?  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 4.5 wins.

THE NBA DRAFT, ACC RECAP

Not sure why the title of this entry is all-caps, but… well… too lazy to fix it.  In any event, the ACC had a very good NFL draft, with 9 players drafted in the first round.  The first round of the NBA draft went pretty well too, with 7 of the first 30 selections coming from the ACC.  Overall, 12 of the 60 selections were ACC… exactly 20%.  Given that 14 players were from foreign countries, that means that 12 of 46–selections were ACC, more than 25%.  Not too shabby.  Nicely done, ACC!

Summary: Pitt is really tough to figure out.  They have been upset by FCS teams in the past, making Youngstown State and Akron (road game) less than certain.  Meanwhile, the remain games are pretty much all contests where there would be no surprising result.  Would you be shocked if Pitt beat Iowa and Notre Dame, but lost to Syracuse and Virginia?  Nope.  Would any combination of wins/losses be a true surprise?  No.  So we say Pitt goes 2-0 to open the season and then it is a crapshoot as to whether and to what extent Pitt gets more or less than 6.5 wins.  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 6.5 wins.

Summary: Wake Forest walks into the season with two or three likely wins and at least four likely losses.  That leaves five toss-up games: @ Syracuse, @ Boston College, @ North Carolina, vs. North Carolina State, and vs. Duke.  Would it shock you to see Wake Forest lose all of those games?  Not really.  The Demon Deacons have a ways to go.  It is nice that they get to play all of the North Carolina schools this year though.  The Confidential goes with an over-under of 3.5 wins.

Summary: Georgia Tech has a very tough schedule.  After Alcorn State and Tulane, where is the next “easy” win?  Virginia?  That is away.  By default, it could be the home game against North Carolina.  The other 8 games?  How about a road slate of Notre Dame, Duke, Clemson, and Miami… got to be tow losses there.  And what about the final four home games?  Pitt, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Georgia.  Are two more losses that improbable.  We see the Yellow Jackets falling all the way down to an over/under of 8.5 regular season wins.

This article is the first in a series of articles in which the Confidential opines regarding the over/under for football wins in 2015.  We’ll take a cursory look at the schedule and determine what we think is the point where folks will struggle to select “over” or “under.”  We hope people will share their comments as to “why” they are going over/under.  If you disagree with our over/under choice, of course, feel free to let us know too.  The first team up: Florida State.  We are going with an over/under of 10.5 regular season wins.

  3. September 18 @ Boston College
  4. October 3 @ Wake Forest
  5. October 10 vs. Miami
  6. October 17 vs. Louisville
  7. October 24 @ Georgia Tech
  8. October 31 vs. Syracuse
  9. November 7 @ Clemson
  10. November 14 vs. NC State
  11. November 21 vs. Chattanooga
  12. November 28 @ Florida

Summary: Florida State is hard this year.  This team could go 12-0 and nobody would be shocked. However, after losing Winston and a second-straight set of studs to the NFL, the Seminoles are bound to take a step back.  Whether that is a step back to 11 wins or 8 wins is anybody’s guess.  Look, Wake Forest upset them a few years back.  Boston College has played them tough recently.  Syracuse and North Carolina State hung on for way too long last year.  With road games at Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Florida–as well as tough home games against Miami and Louisville, the Confidential sees one or two losses.  And if that is a rebuilding year, then Jimbo Fisher is doing a great job in Tallahassee.  The Confidential goes with an over/under of 10.5 for the Seminoles.
