Washington Monthly – National University Rankings

The Washington Monthly has posted its annual list of National University Rankings. Unlike the US News and World Report, this ranking system one is based on the University’s contributions to the public good in the three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

Wolfpack Football 2014 – Better Days

Well it’s almost time, so your Uncle Mikey is going to share with you his thoughts on the NC State Wolfpack’s chances for 2014.

First a look back.  Last year was not bad. It was horrible, devastating, a catastrophe, a waste, a pile of steaming filth of unknown substances. 3-9, including zero conference wins.  Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory vs UNC.  Loathsome quarterback play, little or no defense, and a bunch of players trying desperately to adapt to a new coach’s system with no success.

So, not much to look forward to, right?

Wrong!!! Click through and I’ll tell you why there are plenty of reasons for optimism in the upcoming season! Read more…

Louisville Football: The Over/Under

This article is the next in a series of articles in which the Confidential selects the over/under for football wins in 2014.  We’ll take a cursory look at the schedule and determine what we think is the point where folks will struggle to select “over” or “under.”  We hope people will share their comments as to “why” they are going over/under.  If you disagree with our over/under choice, of course, feel free to let us know too.  The twelfth team up: Louisville.  We are going with an over/under of 8.5.

Louisville Headlines

Even though the basketball season has ended for the Louisville Cardinals the news hasn’t. There has been coaching changes, players coming and going, schedules announced and a contract signed. All of this without mentioning the teams that are still in action. Here are some of the stories making the headlines.

Football: Teddy Bridgewater went gloveless to Pro Day and his performance sufford for it. Once believed to be the top overall pick in the upcoming draft has fallen to about the 20th pick. One scenario even has the Texans selecting Jadaveon Clowney first and Teddy first in the second round. If that scenario plays out what a steal it would be for Houston. Calvin Pryor will join Teddy in New York for the draft putting Louisville in elite company. They will be one of only five programs of who will have multiple players represented at the draft.

Will Gardner is the front runner to replace Bridgewater at QB next season. At the Cards spring game he threw for 546 yards and 4 TDs.

A Sweet Sweet 16

Say what you will about the way the selection committee selected and seeded this years tournament, whether they seeded for TV match ups or not, but it was an incredible opening  weekend. It featured a record six over time games and ample upsets for the underdog lovers. Our beloved ACC is down to Virginia and Louisville and the SEC went 7-0, who would’ve guessed that? The new Big East has been eliminated while the rest of the power conferences has lost at least half of their teams. The Sweet 16 is dominated by the power conferences with the lone exceptions being Dayton and San Diego State.
