The SEC is the best football conference…. just look at the top 25. Even setting aside the rankings bias, there is still no comparison. But is the ACC ready to challenge the Big 10 in football as of 2014? Let’s take a closer look at this battle after Week 1.
This Monday, September 1, Labor Day, will be Black Monday. The Louisville Cardinals will make their ACC debut in Papa Johns Cardinals Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes at 8 p.m. on ESPN. An Orange-out might be passe in Syracuse but the Cards fans and team are excited to be back in black. The traditionalist Charlie Strong refused the teams request to let them wear the black uni’s during his tenure, opting instead to stick with their more traditional red and white uniforms. One of the first things Bobby Petrino did upon his return was to bring back the black, and why not, he introduced them in the first place.

Well it’s almost time, so your Uncle Mikey is going to share with you his thoughts on the NC State Wolfpack’s chances for 2014.
First a look back. Last year was not bad. It was horrible, devastating, a catastrophe, a waste, a pile of steaming filth of unknown substances. 3-9, including zero conference wins. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory vs UNC. Loathsome quarterback play, little or no defense, and a bunch of players trying desperately to adapt to a new coach’s system with no success.
So, not much to look forward to, right?

Well, football season is really right around the corner–in three weeks we will be talking about actual wins and losses, rather than potential and hope. Ranking the ACC teams (plus Notre Dame) is very challenging. First, Florida State may be in a class of their own. The Atlantic is largely a race for second-place, with no real certainty as to how Louisville and Clemson will respond to replacing departing stars. Second, the Coastal is so wide-open… only Virginia really seems unlikely to win it all. With all that, these rankings are only worth so much. But here they are:

If you have not been paying attention, a growing number of coaches in the five power conferences would like to see those conference members schedule only teams from the other power conferences. According to ESPN, 46% (somehow deemed a majority) of coaches favor such a proposal. Should you?
College athletics are changing. You know that, and we know that. The NCAA even recognizes it. If there’s one school that embodies this change, and even more so, the reason behind it, it’s The University of North Carolina. It’s been over four years since Marvin Austin’s famous ‘Club Liv’ tweet (which, coincidently, is controversial for another reason too), and the University has undergone a number of changes that have been woefully underreported and underrated (see them here). But we’re the media and we like sensationalism, so it’s easy to understand why the Carolina Commitment may not be as fun as the continued antics of PJ Hairston.
Today, however, the school revealed another step in the continued healing process with their image, their fans and their athletes. It’s called Complete Carolina, and it’s a long overdue idea that other major Division I programs need to take note of.
ESPN’s Eamonn Brennan recently opined regarding 5 rules changes that he would like to see in NCAA basketball governance. Specifically, he raised the following 5 opinions:
One suspects that the last entry was tongue-in-cheek, but the other four seem serious. Then again, none of them seem likely. The major conferences are not going to agree to a spending cap and our US Constitution seems to have bigger issues than NCAA sports. The cutting of the NCAA President’s salary is a populist measure, at best. So what are rule changes that make sense? The Confidential has a few.
The interwebs are aglow with the activity of Syracuse fans debating each other over where on the happy/sad continuum they should be relative to Jerami Grant’s NBA career. On the one hand, a program’s fans should applaud all of its alums–even if they do not receive the sheepskin promptly or stay all four years. On the other hand, how can a fan base get attached to a player that stays two years and leaves before even hitting stride? This is not limited to Syracuse–this is a phenomenon throughout college basketball.

Randy Edsall–Good Riddance
Randy Edsall’s career record at Maryland was 13-24, including a 6-18 conference record. Last season’s team lost to Marshall in the Military Bowl, essentially a home game. One would expect Edsall to be fairly humble by now, right? Wrong. “As a football coach, I feel better,” Edsall said to applause. “Because I’m going to a football conference; I’m not in a basketball conference anymore.” There you have it… someone who could not succeed in a conference, taking a shot at the quality of conference he could not succeed in. Of course, the conference he left had the reigning national champion. Needless to say, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State will give the minimally-accomplished, maximum ego Edsall plenty of challenges.
So… all the Confidential has to say is this… good luck in the Big Ten, Randy. You will need it. In the meantime, how does that foot taste?
