Notre Dame in the Playoff?

There are hundreds of newspaper articles and blog entries about last night’s game between Florida State and Notre Dame, which Florida State obviously won.  With the win, Florida State moves to 7-0 and is positioned well for the college football playoff.  Mississippi and Mississippi State are also undefeated (for now), setting one of them up to be in the playoff after they play at season’s end.  Obviously, an SEC team WILL be in the playoff.  Beyond that, everyone that matters (i.e. not Marshall) has at least one loss already.  So who would get the final two slots?  The Confidential analyzes Notre Dame’s potential to be in the playoff, despite losing to Florida State and hypothetically reaching 11-1.

Syracuse-Notre Dame Recap: Beware Fool’s Gold

The Confidential was tweeting aplenty during the Syracuse-Notre Dame game.  Indeed, the Confidential got into a twitter-battle (which always makes me think of Dr. Seuss’s “Muddle Puddle Tweetle Poodle Beetle Noodle Bottle Paddle Battle”) over the Syracuse defensive performance.  The upshot is that the Confidential has some legitimate concerns that this Syracuse coaching staff will be seeing Fool’s Gold with the 5 turnovers, just like there was Fool’s Gold with the nearly 1,000 yards of offense the past two weeks.

Washington Monthly – National University Rankings

 

The Washington Monthly has posted its annual list of National University Rankings. Unlike the US News and World Report, this ranking system one is based on the University’s contributions to the public good in the three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

ACC Fans Choice: Notre Dame or West Virginia

The current ACC is 15 schools, one of which is Notre Dame.  Notre Dame participates fully in all sports, with the exception of football.  As we all know, the Fighting Irish are committed to play 5 schools a season in football.  West Virginia is a full member of the Big XII.  The Mountaineers athletic relevance has decreased substantially since making the geographically-unfriendly move.  The question for ACC fans–if West Virginia were to make overtures about joining the ACC… would you rather have West Virginia full-time (allowing an addition of UConn to get to 16 teams) or Notre Dame (in its current form)?

Men’s L-ACC-rosse Finals: Duke vs. Notre Dame

When the ACC announced the conference was expanding to include Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Notre Dame (kinda) everyone recognized that it would be an elite basketball conference. However, with the exception of the Confidential, very few realized just how dominant the conference would be in lacrosse.

Despite the pending loss of Maryland to the B1G, and a big whiff by not landing Johns Hopkins, the ACC continues to be the best lacrosse conference in the country, further evidenced by the All-ACC finals between defending Champion, Duke, and Notre Dame on Memorial Day at 1pm.

Duke defeated Denver 15-12 in the semis, while Notre Dame crushed Maryland 11-5 to advance to the finals.

Women’s lacrosse is no different, pairing one team new to the ACC (Syracuse) against one that is leaving (Maryland) in the Championship game. Syracuse defeated conference-mate, Virginia 16-8 to earn a spot in the finals, while Maryland surpassed Northwestern 9-6. The final game is scheduled for Sunday, May 25th at 8:30pm.

Notre Dame Football: The Over/Under

This article is the next in a series of articles in which the Confidential selects the over/under for football wins in 2014.  We’ll take a cursory look at the schedule and determine what we think is the point where folks will struggle to select “over” or “under.”  We hope people will share their comments as to “why” they are going over/under.  If you disagree with our over/under choice, of course, feel free to let us know too.  The third team up: Notre Dame.  We are going with an over/under of 8.5.

ACC Lacrosse Update

The best conference in lacrosse, the Atlantic Coast Conference, continues to impress.  The latest top 20 for the men has all six schools ranked in the top 9.  The fourth place team in the ACC, Notre Dame, is ranked fifth overall after winning the ACC tournament.  Virginia, who was 1-4 in conference play, is ranked #8 overall.  There is simply no precedent for such top-to-bottom conference domination.

That being said, it is Loyolla and Denver that are atop the standings at #1 and #2.  and Johns Hopkins squeezes in between the ACC sextet at #6.  It was quite a coup for the Big 10 to land Johns Hopkins–the Confidential still bemoans the ACC’s failure to do so.  However, as lacrosse remains a non-revenue sport, there is only so much the conference could have or should have done in that regard.

There are few regular season games left for the ACC schools.  on Saturday, there are a trio of games, as Notre Dame hosts #19 Army, Maryland hosts Navy, and Syracuse hosts Colgate.  Duke travels to Boston on Sunday for its finale.

The women are similarly as impressive, with seven of the eight schools in the top 15.   Of course, with Maryland #1, Syracuse #2, North Carolina #4, and Boston College #5, an argument can be made that the women are doing even better than the men.

All in all, the ACC is simply dominant in lacrosse.  Let’s hope that the ACC can follow through on its dominant regular season by bringing home two trophies.
