Mack Brown: Just BEGGING to be Fired, Hires Greg Robinson

Have you ever heard of the phrase “suicide by police“?   This is where a person “intentionally acts in a menacing way toward law enforcement officials in order to provoke the use of deadly force.”  In other words, you want to commit suicide, but do not have the “courage” (for lack of a better word) to do it yourself and instead force a police officer to be scarred for life in having to do it for you.  Not a fan.  On a far less serious note, it would appear that Mack Brown is committing the professional equivalent of “suicide by police” by hiring Greg Robinson.  Anyone disagree?  Did not think so.

ACC Quick Hitters

As we near the middle of the “dead” period in college sports, there is not a  whole lot to report.  So, for today, let’s just do some “quick hitters.”

Although it is not ACC-centric, at least directly, Frank the Tank’s latest blog entry is as good as ever.   In it he discusses, among other things, why televised sporting events are so valuable.  As you know from experience, we watch sporting events live.  That means we cannot fast forward through the commercials, which means that the advertising space is more valuable.  But read his article for an expanded analysis, as well as his opinions as to why there is not likely to be a Sports TV rights bubble.

College Fantasy Football: A Look at the Top ACC Running Backs

The Confidential previously announced that it will be sponsoring free fantasy football leagues.  As we begin to head towards the season opener, we will take a look at the ACC’s top playmakers–ergo, the top fantasy football studs–for 2013.  The first analysis was quarterbacks.  Today, we will look at the running backs.

The ACC Coaches “Hot Seat”

The phrase “hot seat” is now commonly used to describe coaches that are under a lot of pressure to start winning immediately.  The implication is that failing to have a sufficiently-good season will lead to termination.  In the old days, a coach would get five years to turn a program around.  Now, coaches are on much shorter “leashes.”  Not literally, obviously.  Anyway, who are the ACC coaches on the hot seat headed into the 2013 college football season?

Syracuse, Football Practice Facility, and More

Sean Keeley of the great Syracuse blog, Troy Nunes is an Absolute Magician, had an informative entry today about Syracuse and the creation of a new practice facility for football.  As this is long overdue for the program, all ACC fans should hope that it happens.  After all, a good Syracuse football team is good for the ACC.  The Confidential has one other suggestion though.

Much-Maligned ACC Football Trending Well in Recruiting

According to ESPN’s latest football recruiting rankings, the ACC has three of the top 10 teams, with Notre Dame knocking at the top 10 at #11.  Specifically, Florida State is at #4, Clemson is at #8, and Miami is at #10.  The three traditional ACC powers are where they should be in the recruiting rankings.  But there is other good news.

Golson Hopes to Return to Notre Dame in 2014

ESPN is reporting that former Notre Dame quarterback, Everett Golson, plans to return to the Fighting Irish in the spring.  For Notre Dame fans, this is a good–but, of course, not nearly as good as having him for 2013.  Quite obviously, Golson was instrumental in Notre Dame’s 12-1 season in 2012.

The ACC & Texas

To the average pro-imperialism Big 10 fan, the ACC is ripe for colonization.  Indeed, there is a certain sense of “Well, the grant of rights is nice, but we’ll be back for Virginia, North Carolina, and a few other schools soon enough.”  Just take a look at the comments over at Frank the Tank.  The only issue for them is whether the Big 10 goes to 16 or 20 or 24.  Let’s assume, however, that the Big 10 was able to take Kansas and Virginia (as they predict) in the next round of expansion… do not be surprised to see Texas in the ACC.  Consider this…

Sad Emoticon for UConn

The Confidential, candidly, is disturbed by this whole conference realignment thing.  There are many schools–think Wake Forest and Iowa State–that are extremely vulnerable if the 5 major conferences turn into 4.  There is something inherently “wrong” in dispatching a “have” team into the “have not” category.  Even worse, there are schools that have already been relegated to this status.  Think of the University of Connecticut Huskies.

Do the Tar Heels Have a Height Problem?

Around halfway through the season last year UNC coach Roy Williams realized that his team was at their best when they went small. He plugged shooting guard P.J. Hairston into the starting lineup and played with only one big in James Michael Mcadoo. UNC went on to string off several impressive victories before making a deep run in the ACC tournament.
