The ACC School Mount Rushmores: Maryland

The Confidential has been having some fun with league-wide coaches Mount Rushmores.  Football and Basketball, plus polls for each of football and basketball to share your thoughts.  In fact, it was so sufficiently fun and controversial that we are going to do school-wide Mount Rushmores now.  And we will only put three people on the list, leaving you–our readers–to comment as to who should be the fourth.  We will not do polls anymore.  For today, let’s go with the school that has one foot out the door… Maryland.

Thursday Poll: ACC Mt. Rushmore–Basketball Coaches

Yesterday, we shared our opinions regarding the Mount Rushmore of ACC Basketball Coaches.  Today, it is your turn.  Who would YOU put in the 4th spot?

Wednesday Poll: North Carolina & Sanctions

The North Carolina Tar Heels have had a well documented series of academic failures and other scandals recently.  What is your opinion on whether the NCAA has been sufficiently strict with the Tar Heels to date?

For more information, here are just some of the articles that have chronicled the situation: here, here, and here.

Louisville v Clemson: Football 2013

The ACC media days just ended with a lot of folks predicting that Clemson would win the ACC title this fall.   Meanwhile, Louisville is certainly projected to dominate the AAC.  Our recent poll regarding the expected ACC winner, which included Louisville in jest, was utterly dominated by Louisville.  The question that begs, however, is who would you pick to win a game between Clemson and Louisville?  And this is a game that may actually be played, as both teams could (and should) win BCS berths.  Anyway, here is what we think.

Tuesday Poll: New NCAA Division

Yesterday’s news regarding the momentum behind the five major conferences forming a new division got the Confidential thinking.  On the one hand, it is obvious that there is a huge huge difference in both revenue and the ability to earn revenue.  For every Boise State that rises up to take on the SEC, there are 30 other schools at the bottom of the FBS that have to be satisfied with far less.  Something has to give.  On the other hand, while football makes some sense, what about hoops?  Would the breakaway involve that too–jeopardizing March Madness?   Let’s do a poll and find out what YOU think.  And please add your comment below.  A vote is nice, an opinion (whatever it is) gets a meaningful discussion going.

The poll:

Monday Poll: Who IS the ACC?

The Confidential was started shortly after the ACC announced plans to add Syracuse and Pittsburgh.  From day one, the Confidential approached the ACC as the then-current teams, plus Syracuse and Pittsburgh.  Our rankings reflected 14 teams.

Now, of course, Syracuse and Pitt are officially part of the ACC.  But then Maryland will soon be replaced by Louisville.  And whither Notre Dame, with its 5-game football schedule preventing full membership.

What is your opinion as to the simple question–as of today, who do YOU consider to be part of the ACC?

Thanks for sharing.

ACC Quick Hitters

As we near the middle of the “dead” period in college sports, there is not a  whole lot to report.  So, for today, let’s just do some “quick hitters.”

Although it is not ACC-centric, at least directly, Frank the Tank’s latest blog entry is as good as ever.   In it he discusses, among other things, why televised sporting events are so valuable.  As you know from experience, we watch sporting events live.  That means we cannot fast forward through the commercials, which means that the advertising space is more valuable.  But read his article for an expanded analysis, as well as his opinions as to why there is not likely to be a Sports TV rights bubble.

Maryland vs Louisville: Is It Academics vs Athletics?

When Maryland leaves for the B1G in July 2014 the ACC will no doubt lose an excellent academic institution and a founding member. A lot has already been discussed on this topic but what will the ACC actually gain and lose when the University of Louisville comes in as their replacement? What are the real athletic and academic differences between the two schools?

Where Have All the Good Guys Gone?

I’m going to be honest. I held off writing about the whole PJ Hairston thing because I didn’t want any of it to be true. As a (still) proud alumnus of The University of North Carolina, I’ve been absolutely disgusted at my school the past few years. I became a Tar Heel because I wanted to be associated with excellence AND honesty, not just one of the two. The PJ Hairston situation is the last thing I wanted to see. There’s not a good precedent. Other incidents that seemed isolated at first,  ballooned into full-fledged scandals. This one seems to be heading in that direction.

The ACC Coaches “Hot Seat”

The phrase “hot seat” is now commonly used to describe coaches that are under a lot of pressure to start winning immediately.  The implication is that failing to have a sufficiently-good season will lead to termination.  In the old days, a coach would get five years to turn a program around.  Now, coaches are on much shorter “leashes.”  Not literally, obviously.  Anyway, who are the ACC coaches on the hot seat headed into the 2013 college football season?
