ACC Quick Hitters–News of Recent Days

Other than baseball, not much going on in the world of the ACC.  At least not enough to get 200+ words out of it.  But lumping it all into one blog entry makes more sense than ignoring it.  So here it is:

Pitt has given AD Steve Pederson a 5-year-extension.  You may recall Pederson as the guy who voted against ESPN’s TV deal with the Big East, and then took Pittsburgh off to the ACC, screwing the Big East a second time.  You may also recall Pederson as the guy who seems to run through one football coach per offseason.  Somehow, the powers that be must think he is doing a good job overall though.

Good news for the Miami Hurricanes basketball team, as Donnavan Kirk is transferring back to Miami for his final season of eligibility under the graduate student transfer rule.  Unlike most graduate transfer, Kirk originally played for Miami.  So it is a return to South Beach (OK, Coral Gables).

UConn is not part of the ACC.  Yet.  But let’s give them props for academically qualifying for this year’s Big Dance.  Baby steps.

5-star LB Matthew Thomas plans to stick with his commitment to Florida State.  Good news for the ‘Noles and their fans.

…And the Real Carolina Prevails!

In a season full of extra innings, postponed contests and 57 wins (so far), the North Carolina Tar Heels have always found a way to come out on top. After torrential rain caused Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional to be moved to Tuesday afternoon, the boys in blue showed their neighbors down south who the real Carolina is (recognized by 49 states), defeating border rival South Carolina 5-4 at Boshamer Stadium.

But what’s so amazing isn’t that the team’s postseason hopes are still alive. After all, they’ve been ranked #1 in the country almost the entire year and were the #1 seed in the tournament. No, most remarkable is the streak that the Tar Heels take with them as they set off for their sixth College World Series since 2006, and tenth overall- they haven’t lost two games in a row all season. That’s not just tough to do, it’s nearly impossible.

Update: Tim Tebow–How Can ZERO NFL Teams Want Him?

Update:  Some folks got their wookies bent over the concern that someone could say something nice about Tim Tebow.  Well, ESPN is now reporting that the New England Patriots are going to sign Tim Tebow.  Yes, the Jacksonville Jaguars could not be bothered to sign Tebow to be a backup, but the uber-successful New England Patriots can.  If Bill Belichick and I are the only two people who think Tim Tebow should have a job in the NFL, I’ll take it.  The guy has had some moderate success in the NFL. 

Tebow will never be a fantasy stud at QB in the NFL.  He might not ever start another game.  But, as we noted below, he belongs in the NFL somewhere.  A project worth investing in.  It is too soon to conclude that he should switch positions.

Pack Ends Drought, Omaha Bound!

After trailing Rice 4-1 in the ninth inning, NC State came back to tie the game on Jake Fincher’s double and took the lead for good in the top of the 17th when Brett Williams doubled in Taran Senay.  And with that, the Wolfpack punched their ticket to Omaha for the College World Series for the first time since 1968. Ethan Ogburn pitched the last 5 innings and got the win for the Pack, allowing three hits and no runs during that span.  And no, this correspondent was unable to stay awake for all of it, giving up during the rain delay and delaying his elation until checking the score this morning.

With the win, the Wolfpack awaits the result of the Chapel Hill Super Regional between UNC and South Carolina, currently deadlocked at 1-1.

Georgia Tech: Eliminated in Regionals

Miami: Eliminated in Regionals

Florida State: Upset by Indiana 2-0 in Super Regional

Oregon Offers Scholarship to Famous Toddler

In the wake of USC offering a scholarship to an 8th grader, and perhaps a bit nervous with the departure of Chip Kelly, the Oregon Ducks coaching staff has beaten USC to the punch with Mason Disick, child of Kourtney Kardashian and someone (probably Scott Disick).  The Ducks have offered young Disick a scholarship for 2028.

ACC Football in the Pro Hall of Fame

If you are a fan of college football, then you are at least slightly interested in how players from your favorite school fare in the NFL.  Perhaps you are even a big fan of the NFL too.  Did you know which schools have placed the most players in the NFL Hall of Fame?

Here is the top 10 list, as per the best source we have–the NFL Hall of Fame itself:

  1. Southern California (11)
  2. Notre Dame (10)
  3. Ohio State (9)
  4. Michigan (8) & Pittsburgh (8)
  5. (tie)
  6. Alabama (7) & Syracuse (7)
  7. (tie)
  8. Illinois (6), Miami – Florida (6), Penn State (6), Oregon (6) and Minnesota (6)

That’s right.  Miami, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Notre Dame.

Not Florida State, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Virginia Tech.  You do not see the Big 10’s Wisconsin, Michigan State, Maryland, Rutgers, or Nebraska.  You do not see the SEC’s Florida, Auburn, Georgia, or L.S.U.  You do not even see the Big XII’s Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, or even Texas.

Just recent additions to the ACC, courtesy of the now-destroyed Big East.
