Way to Go Boston College! Weekend 1 in College Hoops.

The ACC had a good opening weekend in basketball, as 14 of its teams went undefeated for a combined 20-0!    The only outlier was Boston College, who lost to UMass to finish the weekend with 1 win and 1 loss.   C’mon Eagles… get with the times!  It’s not like you lost to Kansas.  Sheesh!

It could be worse.  The Big 10 has two teams with losses, as Minnesota and Rutgers lost.  The latter lost to George Washington, showing just how far the Scarlet Knights have to come.  Then again, it’s surprising that George Washington was not Rutgers’ primary OOC opponent in football.

The Pac-12 suffered a few losses, as USC lost to Portland State (ouch) and Washington State lost to UTEP.

The SEC showed it is all about football and not the bouncy ball, as it had four of its teams losing opening weekend.  Missouri, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee all have losses already.

The Big XII went 13-0, continuing a very good run in 2013-2014.  In fact, the Big XII is the only conference without a loss.

Well, the ACC would have, if Boston College had handled its in-state rival.  Granted, none of this matters at all.  The long regular season and the Big Dance will sort it out.  But let’s give Boston College a little needling this week…

Florida State-Syracuse Recap

If you think Matt Millen is better as a TV announcer than a General Manager, you are probably wrong.  And Florida State fans were quick to criticize Millen’s color commentary yesterday.  However, those fans are pretty quick to take any media member to task who fails to bask in the glory of all that is the Seminoles.  So take that for what its worth.  The game?  Pretty good for both teams, actually.

The Over/Under Recap of 2014

As we set forth to do our over-unders for 2015, here is a look at last year’s over/unders:

As you can see, we were within 1/2 a game of the following six schools: Florida State (12 regular season wins vs. over/under of 11.5); Virginia (5 wins vs 4.5); Clemson (9 wins vs. 9.5); North Carolina (6 wins vs. 6.5); Louisville (9 wins vs. 8.5); Duke (9 wins vs. 8.5);

We were slightly off on these five schools: North Carolina State (7 wins vs. 5.5); Miami (6 wins vs. 7.5); Wake Forest (3 wins vs. 4.5); Boston College (7 wins vs. 5.5); Notre Dame (7 wins vs 8.5);

We were way off on on these four schools: Georgia Tech (10 wins vs. 7.5); Virginia Tech (6 wins vs 8.5); Pitt (6 wins vs 8.5); Syracuse 3 wins vs 7.5).

What’s the over/under on how many schools we can come within 1/2 a win of this year?  Ha ha ha.  Just kidding.  Stay tuned for our 2015 over/unders…coming soon!

Clemson North

“The Cleveland Browns have traded the fourth pick to the Buffalo Bills. With the fourth pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select Sammy Watkins, wide receiver, Clemson.”

The Bills gave up their 2015 first and fourth round draft picks for that trade, talk about a bold move. General Manager Doug Whaley told Sammy they were going to draft him and clearly, he meant it. The Bills had the 9th pick, but waiting their turn was not an option if they were going to get their number one choice. This trade was more than just getting Sammy Watkins; it was a statement to the NFL and Bills fans everywhere. The Bills are going to make it to the playoffs this season.  Or bust. Let’s hope it’s not the latter.

From a Clemson standpoint, I love this pick. I was fortunate enough to watch CJ Spiller run over defenses as a Clemson Tiger for one season before he was drafted 9th overall by the Bills in 2010. I watched Sammy Watkins glide his way through secondary defenses countless times on his way to the end zone in that Tiger uniform and I am thrilled to see Spiller and Watkins as teammates next season.

“Clemson North” is what they are calling it, as the Bills now have five former Clemson Tigers on their roster. Running back, CJ Spiller, offensive linemen, Chris Hairston and Antoine McClain, safety, Jonathan Meeks, and now wide receiver, Sammy Watkins.

Sammy Watkins is a player so outstanding that he makes others around him better. To get EJ Manuel healthy and prepped for the 2014 season, there is no doubt Sammy is going to shine. He is on his way to scoring touchdowns on Sundays and I can’t wait to watch. He has been compared to Detroit Lions wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, but next fall Sammy Watkins will begin his professional legacy and players to come will be compared to him.

To all Bills fans out there, rejoice. Clemson Nation gives you Sammy Watkins and we only hope you grow to love him as much as we did (and still do).

The fun is not over for the Clemson faithful. Still left to be drafted are QB Tajh Boyd, WR Martavis Bryant, CB Brashad Breeland, and OL Brandon Thomas.

You can catch night two of the 2014 NFL Draft tonight on ESPN.

ACC Well-Represented in Mel Kiper’s Final Big Board

Mel Kiper issues a “big board” periodically at ESPN.com.  In his latest pre-draft version, he ranks the top 100 players heading into the NFL draft.  This is a fairly decent cheat sheet for the first two nights of the draft.  The ACC is well-represented on this list.
